I thought “plantations” in that context meant not slave plantations but the general idea of a settlement of people in a new land, like the plantation of Scots in Ireland.

The historical recreation of the Plymouth Colony as it existed in 1627, which is still there, has always been known as “Plimoth Plantation.”
