Questions about whether troops have faced racism, anti-Semitism and supremacism on duty would be added to Pentagon workplace surveys under a provision in the House Armed Services Committees version of the annual defense policy bill.
The provision is included in the military personnel subcommittees portion of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) released Monday. The bill would also require the Pentagon to develop a way to track and report supremacist, extremist and criminal gang activity in the armed forces.
The language comes at a time when the military is grappling with racial issues in the wake of nationwide protests over police violence and racial injustice. (?)
But a committee aide told reporters on a background call that the two provisions stem from a hearing the panel held in February on white supremacism in the military.
The military criminal investigation organizations track supremacist, extremist and gang activity when it is part of criminal probe, but at the hearing, it became clear such activity is not tracked when its kicked down to an administrative action or otherwise dealt with by commanders, the aide said.
The language on workplace surveys was in last years House-passed version of the NDAA but was changed during negotiations with the Republican-controlled Senate. The version that was signed into law required the Pentagon to survey whether troops have experienced or witnessed extremist activity in the workplace or reported such activity.

'Have you ever gotten into a heated argument and someone and they used a world you believe can be used to call them a racist?'
'Did someone look at you out of the corner of their eye as if they were thinking racist thoughts?'
Is the Air Force in charge of the Joint Chiefs right now?
I smell USAF inspired B.S.
When I was in the army, a few black guys used to keep asking , “How many in a box?” I had no clue what they meant. I asked a black buddy of mine what it meant. He said they were calling me a cracker. I had never heard that term before. I can only assume they did that because I am white. The ones that called me that seemed upset that it didn’t bother me. After all the things the DIs called me, that was like calling me sir.
EVERY soldier I ever recommended for an Article 15 (Non-Judicial Punishment) Court Martial, and/or elimination under Chapter 14 called me Racist, including the White ones. NEVER stopped me from doing my job.
Want them to be sissys going in, so they can get worse! SMH!
Oh, so they have time to waste writing stupid surveys like that and money to waste printing them? Time to clean house AND the House and rid us of nincompoops.
More avenues for habitual complainers. Not very smart.
Some learn to game the system, and accumulate wealth.
Pentagon should think what they are setting themselves up for.
What will they do when the biggest complaint comes from white males claiming that blacks and women are being promoted over them despite the white males having higher qualifications? Thats the only real discrimination I saw when I was in. And Im not kidding.
Long time ago in the mid 70’s we had a loser - who just happened to be black.
He was about to get the hammer dropped on him so he ran to the EO office to file a complaint. Said the chain of command was racist.
He showed up at the first meeting with his lawyer. The chain of command/concern walked in. The Company SGM (Special Forces Company) spoke broken English, the Company Commander was Japanese and the Bn CSM was black.
And that was the end of that complaint.
Is this bill being vetoed by Trump for
renaming Southern military bases ?
Is Trump still vetoing?
You are talking about a subculture where they make fun of each other’s mom. Nothing is out of bounds. Especially on deployment.
They'll bury the details in the data.
They'll issue broad statements like, '89% of those responding reported discrimination'.
Without specific details, people will assume it's racist white men discriminating against blacks and women.
Well, since our military can’t win a war, can’t protect us, and can’t handle the billions they receive from taxpayers without massive waste, I guess ‘rooting out racism’ should be right up there with ‘giving speeches to Arabs’ for $5,000 a minute... How hard is it to be a jerk and a sellout?
DOD ... Out to lunch
Again.
They’ll bury the details in the data.
They’ll issue broad statements like, ‘89% of those responding reported discrimination’.
Without specific details, people will assume it’s racist white men discriminating against blacks and women.
Youre absolutely right. Impressive.
