Many years ago, I knew a Cherokee man who really resented the designation ‘trail of tears’.
He was an ACLU lawyer who quit that organization because of their involvement in the Roe-V-Wade thing (he made me read the entire ruling, insisting that there was very little *law* argued in it, and that it was basically just a history of abortion. I read it, and found that he was correct.)
I can’t remember exactly why he resented ‘trail of tears’; but I think he said that it was a historically incorrect title - not a designation that anyone at the time chose - and not indicative of the complexity of what really happened.
