As protests continue in Chicago, applications for Illinois firearms permits have been up 501% from June 1 to June 17 compared to 2019, according to the Chicago Tribune.
There were more than 42,000 applications for Firearms Owners Identification (FOID) cards compared to about 7,000 during the same 2019 period.
The firearms services bureau of the Illinois State Police, which issues the FOID cards, told the Tribune that permit applications started rising in March but skyrocketed in June.
Background checks for the sale of firearms have been increasing since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the National Shooting Sports Foundation reported.
More than 100,000 background checks were completed for the sale of a firearm in Illinois during the coronavirus pandemic, coinciding with the nearly 4 million background checks for gun purchases nationwide during the same timeframe.
The recent spike in applications during June coincides with protests and outbreaks of violence in Chicago.
In one weekend from mid-afternoon June 19 to early June 22, at least 106 people were shot, and 14 of those were killed.
According to data from Chicagos Inspector General, arrests had fallen off a cliff after the outbreak of the pandemic with a drop of nearly 75% in arrests.
As of June 4, the Chicago police were on pace for the most arrests in a single week since the citys inspector general started tracking arrest data in 2017, according to local Chicago News WBEZ. Over 1,400 arrests were made between May 31 and June 3. The arrests came as protests broke out against police violence resulting in widespread looting and vandalism. Before the outbreak, arrests had been down.
The Chicago Tribune spoke to Dan Eldridge, owner of Maxon Shooters Supplies and Range in Des Plaines, who said that a stat that jumped out to him was defensive ammunition. We saw May 2020 over May 2019 firearms sales were twice as high, and defensive ammunition was ten times as high.
As civil unrest continues, Americans are embracing their Second Amendment rights as a way to ensure safety and protection for themselves and their families.
That's a LOT of blue and green. Not much yellow or red left.
Looks like you would be right.....
Summary of Illinois Gun Laws
Illinois is a shall-issue state, meaning that Illinois State Police must issue a concealed carry license if the applicant meets certain qualifications. However, Illinois differs from other states in that it still gives law enforcement the right to object to a concealed carry license being issued if they think the applicant is a danger to public safety or himself/herself. If the police do object, then the case is heard by the Concealed Carry Licensing Review Board, who will make the final decision as to whether or not a license is issued. The applicant is notified by mail of the Boards decision. There is an appeal process.
Open carry of a handgun on your person or in a vehicle is illegal.
Illinois law requires residents to have a Firearm Owners Identification Card (FOID) to possess a firearm or ammunition. An Illinois Concealed Carry License (CCL) is required to concealed carry a firearm in Illinois. Applicants must be 21 or older. The license permits the licensee to carry a concealed loaded or unloaded handgun on his or her person or within a vehicle. FOID card holders (without a CCL) can legally carry unloaded firearms that are enclosed in a case. Non-resident licenses are only available for residents of Arkansas, Idaho, Mississippi, Nevada, Texas and Virginia. A 16-hour firearms training course conducted by a state-approved instructor is required for all new concealed carry license applications. In terms of reciprocity, Illinois does not honor CCW licenses from any other state.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, FOID card holders & CCL licensees who submit their renewal application will remain valid during the duration of the states disaster proclamation and for a period of 12 months following the termination of the disaster, even if their renewal application is/was not submitted prior to expiration. In addition, CCL licensees will not be required to immediately submit proof of three-hour training with their CCL renewal application but will need to submit proof of their training within 12 months following the termination of the states disaster proclamation in order to maintain the validity of their CCL license.
Illinois is a Castle Doctrine state. You are under no legal duty to retreat if threatened, and using deadly force is justified. Furthermore, the law prevents claims being filed against any person defending his or her house.
“What will happen in states and localities where people are required to wear a mask yet the concealed carry permit requires one not to wear a mask? Will liberal officials use this to either prohibit concealed array or take away ones permit?”
The state attorney general in South Carolina has already issued his opinion on this question: In brief, it’s okay to legally conceal carry while wearing a kungflu mask. The South Carolina constitution trumps emergency declarations. And the SC governor, although sometimes a bungling nitwit, supports that interpretation, as do the elected county sheriffs.
So, liberal morons running the state’s leftist enclaves have been put on notice not to try any stupid cr*p.
They are empty now!
“If not mistaken, Il is a shall issue state, no? Delays due to heavy demand, but still shall issue.”
Yes, that is true for CCW: IL is a Shall Issue state.
