Chinese military reveals rifle-sized railgun prototypes

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has miniaturized an electromagnetic railgun and developed pistol- and rifle-sized synchronous induction coilgun prototypes. These weapons’ technical capabilities were recently revealed to the general public for the first time in a demonstration session.

Developed by the PLA Army Logistics University, the weapons, named Small Synchronous Induction Coilguns, come with pistol-sized, rifle-sized and land robot-mounted variants, according to a report by Chinese military news website js7tv.cn last week.

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The coilguns are essentially miniaturized, portable electromagnetic railguns so they can be used by single foot soldiers, the report said. To deal with complicated battlefield situations, they can also be mounted on small land robots and conduct armed reconnaissance missions.

According to the performance demonstration video, the coilguns use bullets stored in reloadable magazines just like a conventional gun, and they also handle like one. The coilguns can easily penetrate multiple wood plates and thin steel plates at a relatively close distance.

The problem with these has always been battery power and bulk, not the accelerator part. One wonders if they’ve solved the battery issues.

There’s also weather and terrain issues. Water and dirt and electronics don’t mix.

Crap gun. The penetration of an air rifle. Regular rounds perform much better.

This will be very useful if the PLA are planning to take on India in Quake 3 Arena.

Ever take one of those Crosman pump pistols - the ones they say to only pump ten times - and give it about 20 with a .17 cal pellet in it? If I'd gotten caught for all the damage I did with one as a teen, I'd still be paying restitution. They were a menace and potentially deadly. Windshields were a specialty.

I was a bad boy.

The last few generations of commercial smartphones have demonstrated that the problems of water ingress into the electronics can be handled by modern coatings and a solid state device wish such coatings has little to worry about dust or dirt. The coatings are tech available to and in China due to their electronics manufacture.

Air rifles don’t penetrate steel plate. On the other hand, if a real, practical arm, this would be just the first generation and subject to mass improvement. It would also mean that a trooper could carry more rounds for the same weight of load. Big if, though.

Solar powered.

Or perhaps each soldier has a cohort who carries a portable windmill to power up the battery.

</sarc>

Reality is, power density of a battery is so much less than gun powder, so even if it works once, even twice, a battery small enough to be ‘man portable’, will discharge VERY quickly. Remember, this ‘technology’ coming from the creators of the soon to collapse Three Gorges Dam. CCP ‘engineering’? No damn good.

No. I have a Crosman pump rifle. Yes, it says to pump ten times but I do more. Only use BBs in it, afraid to use pellets because the penetration with BBs is nice. Used on gophers and rats, never on windshields!

Chemicals are better.
Not sure at what point of size and weight EM is superior.
But it’s not superior at this level.

The battery is probably something the size of a steamer trunk just outside the frame

We were young. Teens. Bored. Way too much testosterone and too little jobs or money. We vented. Eventually those rubber seals gave out after shooting so many over-presure shots, and you’d be lucky to hit a beer can at ten yards with enough force to move it. We didn’t upgrade to .22’s because they made noise. For those purposes, anyway. Squirrels and crows were another matter. People were grateful - we were free pest control.

They always think they will be special when communists take over.

They are. They are considered “intellectuals” and killed first

Probably not a battery, at least not directly.

You need a faster discharge than a battery can supply to drive a projectile.

They are probably using a capacitor bank.
