The deadly hippy crack craze: HARRY WALLOP on the oh-so-trendy – but sometimes FATAL – drug of choice for the post-lockdown revellers who are turning Britain into a giant dustbin

Lucy, like most 18-year-olds, has been enjoying her new freedom as lockdown has eased. She has started gathering with friends in the park in North London. But unlike teenagers from a previous generation she doesn't smoke, and only drinks occasionally. Instead, she is a frequent user of nitrous oxide — or laughing gas — which she and her friends inhale from balloons. She has been since she was 15. 'Almost every party I've been to, people have been doing it or I have done it,' she says nonchalantly. 'It makes me laugh and feel light-headed and sort of light in my body. I like it.'

Humphry Davy discovered the effects of nitrous oxide and he coined the phrase "laughing gas". The Georgian/Regency elite would hold parties inhaling nitrous oxide to get high.

You may be thinking of ammyl nitrate, which is supposedly a mild stimulant that is alcohol based.

What the article describes used to be called Huffing. Deeply inhaled chemical fumes for the purpose of feeling tipsy or high.

I’ve always heard you could permanently damage your brain or your nervous system by toying with this stuff. The danger kept me away from it as a youngster.
Plus it seemed like a downward activity for losers. Something you wouldn’t want folks to know about you.

A friend of mine in college died from Laughing gas. His dad was a Dentist and he and some of his “friends” got into his dads office and had a party. He OD’ed and the friends dumped his body out in the country just south of Charleston Illinois.

Certainly was a thing in New Orleans. I knew older friends who would go and huff balloons of laughing gas from street vendors. They started putting a stop to selling those right around the time I was old enough to get into trouble. Yes, people died from it and it was usually through stealing or breaking into dentist offices.
