Louisville mayor issues apology after protesters' belongings damaged during removal from Jefferson Square Park

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Mayor Greg Fischer is issuing an apology, after protesters were left scrambling to salvage belongings removed from Jefferson Square Park overnight Saturday.

Those participating in peaceful protests in downtown Louisville arrived at Metro Solid Waste Management’s Meriwether Avenue site to find audio equipment, cell phones, tents, coolers, first aid kits and other valuable items severely damaged.

The mayor addressed the incident on Twitter after seeing photos and videos of people picking up what was left of their belongings.

“The treatment of their personal property was not acceptable and not our intent. I apologize for the miscommunication between our Public Works crews,” Fischer said.

The Department of Public Works also issued an apology for the poor treatment of protesters belongings saying, “an error in communication and judgement took place, and for this we are deeply sorry.”

This comes nearly 24 hours after city officials decided to prohibit camping in Jefferson Square Park after Steven Lopez opened fire into a crowd of demonstrators, killing 27-year-old photographer Tyler Gertz.

Louisville Metro Police along with Metro Public Works began dismantling the protest encampment.

Mayor Fischer said the city now has a process in place for those to file a claim for lost or damaged items.

This is so embarrassing...the mayor created this situation by permitting it to begin with.

It is completely lost on me how taking over and setting up a camp at a public park is supposed to "send a message" about anything.

The mayor is a complete loss. The protesters have gotten what they asked for from a revamp of the police departments to $50,000,000 in activists’ demands for money.

Why are they still there?

WTF? Why apologize?

These illegal campers have no expectation of care from the government enforcing well-known laws on the books. It’s not as if the protesters have a reputation for respecting the property rights of others.

Storeowners have returned to their property to find it stolen and damaged.

I work in Louisville but have been working from home since late March. I may quit my job when they ask us to stop coming in. But I’m 66 and considered retiring at the beginning of the year.

It’s a 3 hour commute so I’m not exactly looking forward to it anyway. And I’ve definitely become a “LIFER” (it’s an acronym).

I think we are witnessing the end of western civilization as we know it. The left is all in and no form of cultural “MAD” will stop them. I think the hands of the right are tied and it will become evident if the election approaches and it still looks like Trump can win.

AT this point I seriously think it has entered the “spiritual battle” point. We are watching insanity rule in pockets (blue cities) all over the planet.

But they really don’t. That’s the problem. They move forward as if they think they do. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because they thought they could win. And they knew that if that didn’t destroy our will to fight, they would probably be in big trouble.

The left is Japan and the right is the US, and they have attacked Pearl Harbor - and they are still expanding in the far east. My message to the left - enjoy it while you can because the Dogs of War are about to be released if you continue.

I agree with you. Things are certainly going downhill much faster than I thought possible.

I don’t think you could pay me enough to ever consider working in a downtown environment again...doubt I’m the only one. And the extraordinary thing is that these people creating an environment of disruption and less safety will disproportionately harm minorities the most as it takes away their jobs and livelihoods - and perhaps that is their goal in order to create more poverty and more unrest. For example, there are (or were) some very nice restaurants downtown that are owned and operated by minorities and immigrant families...so much for being able to patronize them now.

I bought my Kentucky farm in 2008 two weeks before the election, partly because I saw it as a great bug out location from my Seattle home. I moved there in 2011 and bought the 20 acres next to it a couple of years later (now 32 acres). I’m visiting seattle right now because my father (90) died and were clearing things up.

I never thought the small reason that I honestly didn’t think would really come to pass would actually matter. It’s like putting a gun under your pillow for defense, knowing you will almost certainly never use it - and then find yourself shooting a perp entering your bedroom with a knife.

My wife and I are so glad we moved here. Even when everything was fine we were glad, but this may just save our - and our childrens’ - lives.

Who really believed they would actually USE the bomb shelter...

This shows whose side the mayor is on, and it’s not on the side of the normal, law-abiding citizens.

Classic Democrat Party and it’s anarcho-tyranny.

The let their goons riot, then demand more concessions from the law abiding population.

Domestically, all this turmoil is being strenuously pushed by the media (turmoil sells papers and gets ratings. I continue to be stunned by how many people still believe the media is some altruistic, caring force for good when they’re out to make money like any other business).

What the media has scrupulously avoided mentioning is that a big portion of these “Black Lives Matter” protesters are just skinny white kids acting out after being quarantined in the house for three months. It simply doesn’t conform to their “deeply serious” narrative about all this.

I did 17 years of hard time in the heart of downtown shitcago. But that was when America was still America (before Obama).
