NRA has shed 200 staffers this year as group faces financial crisis
The Guardian ^ | June 29, 2020 | Peter Stone

After spending over $30m to help elect Donald Trump in 2016, the National Rifle Association faces a deepening financial crisis with over 200 staff layoffs and furloughs in 2020, according to three NRA sources, gun analysts and documents.

The situation is likely to hinder efforts by the gun rights group to help Trump and other Republicans win in November’s election.

The 200-plus layoffs and furloughs, which have not previously been reported and were mainly at NRA headquarters in Virginia, were spurred by declines in revenues and fundraising, heavy legal spending, political infighting, and charges of insider self-dealing under scrutiny by attorneys general in New York and Washington DC, the sources say.

“The widespread Covid layoffs and furloughs have further harmed both the NRA’s legal capacity and political influence beyond what was already a troubling deterioration,” said one NRA official who requested anonymity to discuss internal matters. The official added the outlook this year for NRA political spending was “deeply concerning.”

NRA staff learned about the furloughs, plus 20% staff pay cuts, four-day work weeks and other belt tightening, in an April email from Wayne LaPierre, the longtime top executive of the NRA, which claims it has 5 million members.

LaPierre’s email to the “NRA family” said “we have lost significant revenue” and linked the austerity moves to the pandemic’s stay-at-home orders. The email said the NRA hoped to bring back those furloughed when its finances improved.

"After spending over $30m to help elect Donald Trump in 2016, the National Rifle Association..."

That's why some people oppose the NRA. That's their real motive. This is the time for all loyal conservatives to support the NRA's efforts. Second Amendment rights are important to many who need to be further educated about their rights by the NRA. Trump 2020!

I would have donated by now this year, however I live in a deep blue state under strict economic destruction polices. I am in survival mode trying to make sure I can pay essential bills.

There have been charges of Wayne LaPierre living too high on the hog in the past two years. That, plus the Wuhan Flu Plandemic and the fact that gun sales have gone through the roof even among demonrat voters, doesn’t have me worried.

My family have been making a lot of ammo purchases in the past 6 months, so it’s hardly all BLM nuts.

Wayne Lapierre is the reason why the NRA will never get another dime from this life member - donated roughly $5000 over the years which evidently went toward his 2019 $2,255,793 salary package including bonus and benefits, $275,000 for suits, and $243,000 for luxury travel etc etc...

They can go fkcu themselves forever, I'll give what I can afford directly to Trump.

Old news.

Trust the British Marxist “Guardian” to just “discover” it. They are worse than Pravda ever was.

It would if many NRA members were not disgusted by what Wayne LaPierre was recently discovered doing with the money they’d sent in.

Wayne needs a new custom designer suit, personally tailored on his chartered jet.

Except the NRA basically didn’t even bother getting involved in any of the lawsuits out there, not even the suit that (briefly) overturned their magazine ban.

Get rid of Wayne Dupree and most of the BOD, they just might turn that trend around.

Until a complete and full audit of the finances of the organization is done and the waste identified there will be few who will hold their nose and keep donating to someone's pocket.

Every organization I have been involved with winds up with the few controlling the many and using the donations as personal piggy banks to get rich. The NRA is no different. Remove LaPierre and donations will start up again. Wayne had good intentions when he started, but has forgotten his primary mission, support and defend the 2nd Amendment.

Now, it's a sweepstakes of the month, that should be audited for winners/losers, super 'special' membership status that has no meaning except to garner more donations.

Get rid of LaPierre and their troubles will be over.

Are you a member of the NRA?

I am, and what you just wrote sounds like Bill Kristal saying that the pubbies should just, "get rid of Trump and all of our troubles will be over".

The NRA, like America, is far from perfect, but their record of protecting our Second Amendment rights, is beyond reproach.

Show me an instance where the NRA has caved in the 2nd amendment fight.

well those big-ass executive salaries and perks probably should be re-examined

It's long past time that La Pierre should be gone.

There have been charges of Wayne LaPierre living too high on the hog in the past two years.

Two year ago? How the hell did people not see that he was a problem 10 years ago? Only by drinking the kool-aid,and not looking at them with eyes wide open, that's how. It's sort of like the Wounded Warriors issue where veterans were the marketing tool to raise money that they never saw because it went into salaries and perks.

Maybe it would help if, as a general policy, they stopped endorsing allegedly “pro-gun” democRats like Harry Reid.

I can certainly understand not endorsing anti-gun faux Republicans, but it is NEVER appropriate to endorse ANY democRat.

“Get rid of LaPierre and their troubles will be over.”

That’s step number ONE!

NRA can not survive as long as Wayne LaPierre is associated with it in ANY way.

He has become corrupt. Time to say goodnight Irene.
