Can Hagia Sophia Become a Mosque? Turkish Court Will Soon Decide

Armenian patriarch surprisingly backs President Erdoğan’s position, asking also for Christian prayer at famous former church.

After 85 years as a museum, the Hagia Sophia is poised to once again become a mosque. Might it also again become a church?

A Turkish court is scheduled to rule on July 2 if the iconic Byzantine basilica can be opened for Muslim worship.

Built in 537 by Emperor Justinian, in 1453 the Ottoman sultan Mehmet II converted the Hagia Sophia into a mosque. Five centuries later, the secularizing founder of modern Turkey, Kamal Ataturk, turned it into a museum.

UNESCO designated the Hagia Sophia as a World Heritage Site in 1985.

President Recep Erdoğan has long stated his desire that the building would welcome prayer. In March, he led guests in silent Quranic recitation on the 567th anniversary of the conquest of Constantinople, dedicating the prayer to Mehmet II.

Last week, Erdoğan found an unlikely supporter.

“I believe that believers’ praying suits better the spirit of the temple than curious tourists running around to take pictures,” tweeted Armenian Patriarch Sahak II, resident in Istanbul.

This decision will soon (July 2) be made by the Turkish Court, at the direction of Erdoo the Islamist Dictator of Turkey.

Erdoo believes he is destined to rule the Region that was once the Ottoman Empire. (Which was huge)

He has silenced any criticism of his rule, by prison, death or bombing. He even tries to silence criticism of his actions inside foreign nations in the West. To the point of assassination.

God knows exactly what Erdoo is. He will not be mocked. I see no reason to appease Erdoo, he clearly serves Great Evil. Authority among men will have no affect on the outcome of this.

Is the Armenian Patriarch their version of a RINO? This makes no sense.

I guess Patriarch Sahak thinks that if he grovels enough, he’ll be permitted to entire the building once every other month. Through a side door, of course.

Appeasement here. Appeasement there. Appeasement everywhere.

“I believe that believers’ praying suits better the spirit of the temple than curious tourists running around to take pictures,” tweeted Armenian Patriarch Sahak II, resident in Istanbul.

I believe this Patriarch said a few weeks ago, when the mosque plan was floated, that Christians are a voiceless minority in Turkey, and he has no control over what happens.

Given the genocide on Christians Turks have perpetrated in the past, its probably worse than that. He likely fears for his life, and the lives of his flock, if he says anything too negative. Erdogan will send political-islamist thugs out on a rampage against remaining Christians.

I’m not sure if he’s any better, but we have a replacement for Erdogan here in PA...

I’m not sure how I feel about that. Except, there is no point in appeasing Erdoo. He is pure Evil.

Yes. I’ve heard that.

In another time the Kemalists would have solved this problem for the world. Of course, they are almost as brutal as Erdoo is.

"Of course, they are almost as brutal as Erdoo is"

It's the only thing that works over there.

I must say, the Hagia Sophia is an awesome structure. Hard to believe it was built nearly 1,500 years ago.

I see what you did there...

And very underrated for their cleverness in turning a phrase.

If Erdogan wants it to be a mosque, it will be a mosque. They can kiss the tourist money away though if he goes that route.

Yes, but right now, I suspect the tourist money is pretty small. People are afraid to go to Turkey.
