If you’re deputized and things go badly South, will the legal system stand behind you as a deputy, or single you out and turn on you? It’s not as if you have a police union at your back, for better or worse.

Thanks for the post This is my County Sheriff and it’s the first I’ve heard of this, I’ve pretty much stopped watching the news just out of repetition and disgust. He’s made some personal mistakes but he’s a law and order Sheriff. I’ll have to look deeper into this.

I’m sure I’m missing something here, but my copy of the Constitution ends at Article VII. I’ve never seen Article IX except in the Bill of Rights and we call that one the Ninth Amendment.

I’ve always been curious about the powers held by the local Sheriff but I’ve never seen them enumerated. Does anybody have an unabridged version of the Constitution that I could reference?

During the run-up to Y2K , amid all the apocalyptic predictions, there was a sheriff in Iowa, I think, who said he would deputize all CCW holders. Thought that was a pretty good idea as it would, hopefully, winnow out the yahoo types who didn’t practice gun safety.
