China wanted Hong Kong because it had emerged as a giant global financial center. Their closed communist society prevented them from building such a powerhouse internally but Hong Kong was isolated and so they could let it run and deliver them money, power, and influence. But they are in the process of killing the golden goose. The more ‘actually communist China’ they turn Hong Kong into, the less of a financial powerhouse it will become.
This may well cause Hong Kong to collapse.
