In the late 60s I trained to go to Afghanistan with the Peace Corps (alas I got deselected two days before the group left). But besides learning a little Farsi, I learned a lot about Afghanistan and Afghans. They can be wonderful people and very hospitable. But they really, really, really don’t take well to invaders. When the Soviets invaded, I thought to myself, “they won’t last all that long”, and they didn’t.

The Brits also had several ‘Afghan Wars’. In one (the first?) the army negotiated a withdrawal of their troops and followers from Kabul. The Afghans waited until the army got to the Khyber Pass and slaughter them all, except one—men, women and children. Survivors were set to by the women with their knives.

There is absolutely nothing that we can accomplish with our troops there. President Trump is right to correct this mistake. Not our circus, not our monkeys.
