On the Redskins' name, it's corporate America and the liberal media against Native Americans
Washington Examiner ^ | 7/3/20 | Timothy P. Carney

Posted on 07/03/2020 12:36:47 PM PDT by Renkluaf

Would you be surprised if multinational corporations and wealthy, powerful, mostly white commentators in New York and D.C. got their way over the will of Native Americans on an issue that is mostly about Native Americans?

I wouldn’t be. In other words, I won’t be surprised if our wokeness-obsessed corporate titans combine with our ever-leftward-lurching media to strip the Washington Redskins of their name — despite the fact that the overwhelming majority of Native Americans are not offended by it.

FedEx, the named sponsor of the stadium where the Redskins play, demanded that the team change its name. Nike won’t sell Redskins gear from its team store. Pepsi is on the game too. And the major media are cheering this all on.

This is a good time to remind the world that Native Americans largely disagree with corporate America and the elite media on this issue. The most thorough poll of Native American sentiment in the past decade found that 90% of Native Americans didn’t find the team name racist. Only 9% found it offensive.

This poll was commissioned by the Washington Post, which has — before and since — been lobbying the Redskins and campaigning nonstop for the team to change its name.

"The survey of 504 people across every state and the District reveals that the minds of Native Americans have remained unchanged since a 2004 poll by the Annenberg Public Policy Center found the same result. Responses to The Post’s questions about the issue were broadly consistent regardless of age, income, education, political party or proximity to reservations."

A more recent, less scientific poll (it was conducted over the web with individuals who self-identified as Native American) found that still a clear majority were not offended. The most common emotion elicited among Native Americans by the team’s name? “Pride.”

You can see the exasperation in the writing of the Washington Post reporter who wrote up these studies.

“That finding,” she wrote, “is from a recent survey and — as you probably remember, even if you’ve tried to forget — falls in line with what a Washington Post poll found three years ago and an Annenberg Public Policy Center poll found 12 years before that.”

It’s upsetting to our liberal establishment when the supposed victims they are trying to "white-knight" don’t feel wronged in the first place. That won't stop the elites though.

Dear Native Americans,

We'll be the ones to decide when you're offended.

The Left

It’s not quite current.

Tribe leaders and now the common indian have been caught up in the woke movement.

redskins and Mount Rushmore are now quite offensive.

Did you really think they would stay away from the temptation of victim-hood with all the money and power it offers?

They will banish black folks and Indians both from the public eye in the name of “justice.”

Where are all the tribal leaders speaking out against the name? Oh, BTW and my native tribal friends do not like the term Native Americans, they go by their tribal name.

The left is doing what it can to suppress the memory of Native Americans in and substitute BLM.

I heard a Native American speaking about the Redskins name long ago. He said that there was 75% unemployment and 30% were alcoholics at his reservation. He had much bigger problems to worry about than the name of a pro sports team.

Well no wonder they haven't looted and rioted -- they're hung over.

How did this insanity begin and when will it end?

After the Victory of 1776, Americans declared that English would no longer be used by citizens and so England declared that Americans could no longer legally use the English language anyhow.

Revenge!!!!!!

Naming the football team was a tribute to native Americans....
How about this , we cancel everything in our society that reference native Americans and regulate them to Historical obscurity....

I’d hate for my culture be associated with anything having to do hard work, discipline, teamwork, courage and dedication. How awful.

If I recall correctly, the term “Native Americans” has come into common usage because someone decided the terms “Indians” or “American Indians” were not politically correct. Yes, I’m sure nobody asked such people if they wanted to be referred to by such a term.

You make a good point, that there are over 500 recognized aboriginal tribal peoples in America. But the powers that be want a catch all name for such peoples, so “Native American” is the current preferred term.

We do the same with “Asian” peoples, who themselves make distinctions among Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Lao, Thai, and many others. We do the same with “Hispanic” or “Latino”, who themselves make distinctions among Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Honduran, etc.

Also. To me there are no hyphenated Americans. We are all Americans. Period.
