Putin bitterly regrets that the Ukraine was allowed to dissolve its union with Russia. He will huff and puff , try to recover as much of eastern Ukraine as possible as he took Crimea. But he realizes that the more populous and wealthier Western Ukraine is culturally different and there would never be peace if he moved militarily against them.

Which I took to mean, not president of Russia, but of the Russian *people*. Which means he hopes sooner or later to reincorporate at least those lands (eastern Ukraine, possibly Belarus, and other regions) where Russians are a significant presence.

At least, thats the way I took it. That seems to be his stance in general.
