Australia to suspend Hong Kong extradition treaty, extends visas for Hong Kongers; China Denounces Decision as Meddling in Internal Affairs

Australia’s prime minister said the country will halt its extradition agreement with Hong Kong over the passage of a new Beijing-backed "national security" law and will extend temporary visas from Hong Kongers in Australia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced Thursday that the visa extension will allow those from Hong Kong with temporary visas to stay for five additional years and will open a path to permanent Australian residency, according to the New York Times. Morrison also encouraged businesses to move to his country.

“We are a great immigration nation,” the prime minister said.

The move comes in response to a controversial new national security law. The law is expected to have profound effects on the freedom of residents in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous region claimed by China. In response to the law, Canada has suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong, and the United Kingdom has opened a path to citizenship for up to 3 million residents of the former British colony.

“Our government, together with other governments around the world, have been very consistent in expressing our concerns about the imposition of the national security law on Hong Kong,” Morrison said. “Today we have agreed to announce that that national security law constitutes a fundamental change of circumstances in respect to our extradition agreement with Hong Kong.”

Winston Peters, Australia’s deputy prime minister who handles foreign affairs, said that China’s move to pass the new national security law has “fundamentally changed the environment for international engagement there.”

China immediately denounced Australia for its decision.

“We urge the Australian side to immediately stop meddling in Hong Kong affairs and China’s internal affairs,” the Chinese embassy in Australia said in a statement. “Otherwise it will lead to nothing but lifting a rock only to hit its own feet.”

Other Western nations should do the same. They may have an Asian mentality, but they understand the value of freedom.

Canada and Mexico (and a host of other countries) refuse to extradite murderers to the United States because we have the death penalty.

Wouldn’t this also be “meddling in our internal affairs.”

Whatever credibility Hong Kong's legal system might have had among civilized nations a month ago has met the same fate as those thousands of kids in Tienanmen Square in 1989.

Good move on Australia's part to make their distrust of the new system clear. And it's a smart move for them to offer visas to democracy minded residents.

China could fill Hong Kong with mainland Chinese... what China wants is the expertise and the institutional knowledge. What they don’t understand is the magic in the mix is freedom - and once that’s gone it’ll be a hellhole... with or without the current Hong Kong residents.

So China should let them leave - when China takes over the magic will die anyhow.

Sorry, forgot about that a-hole.

There are others too. There was a teenager who killed his own family in Washington or Oregon who escaped to Canada. They wouldn't extradite him until they got a guarantee that he wouldn't be given the death penalty. I can't recall his name, not that it matters.

Also, serial torture-killer Charles Ng went on the lam to Canada after his prison-dungeon-torture facility (including video tapes) was discovered in 1985. Again, Canada refused to extradite him as long as he was liable for the death penalty (even though his known crimes were in California, where no one has been executed for decades).

Other Western nations should do the same. They may have an Asian mentality, but they understand the value of freedom.

Partner, the Chicoms are very worried that all the Hong Kong freedom loving people will leave Hong Kong.

The Chicoms got Hong Kong free and the Brits accepted this garbage of turning over Hong Kong in 2037. The Chicoms want H.K. now!

It really should get everybody on this thread P.O.ed at the Chicoms because they have gotten Hong Kong free of charge and yet they are complaining that Australia should not get involved with the freedom loving people of Hong Kong. I would say a big Bravo Sierra to the Chicoms.

England said it would take in 3 million of these freedom loving folks.

Our patience is wearing very thin right now with these Chicoms.
