I know teachers get paid little, but the operating costs of the school heavily depend on the children actually physically attending. Without the children physically there, the buses aren’t being used, the cafeterias don’t need to provide food, less custodial, etc.

In small towns on the Rockies in Colorado, elementary school teachers were getting over $43,000 per year for their first year. That was before 2010.

And by the way just how much a teacher makes has nothing to do with it. They are getting paid for staying home. Ergo the teachers unions have little to no interest in getting back to school.
Putting them on furlough might help sharpen their thinking.
The coronavirus fatality rates for school age kids is close to zero. Why are schools closed again?
