Dow futures surge more than 400 points on vaccine hope, airline and cruise stocks jump

Stock futures jumped Wednesday after drug developer Moderna said its coronavirus vaccine produced antibodies in all patients in an early trial, raising hopes for a faster economic recovery.

Moderna's potential vaccine to prevent Covid-19 produced a "robust" immune response, or neutralizing antibodies, in all 45 patients in its early stage human trial, according to newly released data published Tuesday evening in the peer-reviewed New England Journal of Medicine.

Shares of Moderna surged 15% in premarket trading. Stocks directly tied to an economic reopening jumped following the vaccine news. American Airlines, United Airlines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines all popped more than 7% each in premarket trading.

It’s going back to level it was a few days ago. A few days ago we were about back to beginning of year. My theory is a few days ago many pulled money out when values returned to start of year.

Or are the Chinese throwing a bunch of money into the Stock Market to gain more control over companies?

Here’s a question: If airlines and/or cruise lines demand proof of immunization to board, will consumers comply...?

I believe Moderna was the one Fauci was pushing, perhaps he had a financial interest.

IMO the tourist industries will only do what they have to to be in compliance with federal requirements. Anything more is counter-business. A good example is the cruise line requirement for a not from a doctor that a person didn’t have any underlying health issue in order to board. Well, that didn’t last long when other cruise lines didn’t follow suit.

The industry will comply, but will customers?

FWIW, I’m not gonna be first in line for any WuFlu vaccine. And I’m not an anti-vaxxer. I get a flu shot annually and am current on all my other necessary vaccinations.

But I won’t be getting one for WuFlu any time soon.

And if that means I can’t board an airline, so be it. I don’t cruise, anyway.

This whole mess would largely go away if Congress would pass across the board WuFlu liability immunity for biz, any and all biz.

The fact that Congress has refused to do that is telling.

And the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine candidate may go on wider trials very soon.

Quick development of a vaccine may save the country, in ways we would never have believed.

I wish I knew for certain what the market was going to do over the next 5 to 10 years. I’m in the market, but not 100%. First time in my life I’m not fully in. But I’m 61 now, and the internet is filled with doomsday prophets... and my greatest risk is several years of bear market. I dunno.... truth is I don’t need profits to live out rest of my life... but not being all in is such a strange feeling for me.

If you knew for certain then there would be no risk and your return would be the same as a CD. You probably should not be 100% invested in stocks anyway.

A good piece of investment wisdom: When you’ve won the game, get off the field.
A friend pointed out that we spend almost all our lives accumulating wealth. There comes a time when it’s best to de-accumulate some wealth. That can be harder to do for those who are afraid of running out of money.
I faced your situation several years ago when I realized that the biggest danger to me long term wasn’t missing out on future profits, it was a catastrophic loss.

I HATE what has happened to our country. You know they’re going to make the vaccine mandatory. It’s their only “out” for all this lockdown and mask nonsense. What will they do with those who won’t comply? Will we not be able to work or buy or sell? This will get MUCH WORSE before it gets any better. People are going to be KILLED over this before it’s over.
