The couple's attorney, Albert Watkins, was shrewd to take possession of the wife's pistol. During the confrontation she had her finger on the trigger and was pointing it at the mob. The prosecution could have made a case around this (though I still think her actions were justified). Claiming that the handgun was inoperable takes this off the table.

Note that the husband showed proper trigger discipline and (as far as I could tell) avoided pointing it directly at anyone.

And with her other hand on her hip. What a strange stance. That’s the way you might approach some unruly kids in your house or yard - minus the gun, of course.

I don’t imagine she’s had a lot of range time or she wouldn’t have been standing like that OR holding the weapon like that..and absent range time, she shouldn’t have had the gun - period!
