It’s true.
I remember way back in ‘86 when Lewis and Bond faced off in the Dem run-off. The winner was as good as elected to Congress because it was a heavily Dem district.
Lewis won the run-off narrowly primarily by winning huge margins among white liberals who were alarmed at Bond’s fiery rhetoric. Lewis was thought to be calmer and more well thought out.
I think Lewis hated Bond because he was “too White.” Their voting records were both horrific and indistinguishable from the other (Communist/racist). Bond was more of a show horse and publicity hound.
