China has be slowly gaining power under the radar for years and biding their time for this moment. In 2012 a high level CCP party official, Wang Lijun, defected to the US consolate with a treasure trove of intelligence. He asked for asylum under the Refugee Act. The CIA and State Department were ecstatic at this intelligence coup and quickly sought approval up the chain. Everything was set to fly him out of China until Joe Biden, the point man in China, found out. Biden had arranged a meeting between Xi Jinping and Jeffery Katzenburg of Hollywood’s Dreamworks Studio to promote greater Chinese investment in US film production.
Biden vetoed all the US agencies and ordered Wang turned over to the Chinese secret police rather than risk upsetting Xi and losing the investment deal. Wang is currently being held in a Chinese prison on a 14 year sentence and his status is uncertain.
