China is moving to close the US consulate in the southwestern city of Chengdu in retaliation for the forced closure of the Chinese diplomatic facility in Houston on Tuesday, according to a source briefed on the decision.
Washington maintains five consulates on the Chinese mainland in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, Chengdu and Wuhan as well as a consulate general for Hong Kong and Macau. The closure of the Chengdu facility is expected to escalate tensions between China and the US...
Hu Xijin, editor-in-chief of the nationalist tabloid Global Times, said China would take countermeasures but that closing the Wuhan consulate would not be strong enough as the US had already evacuated staff during the Covid-19 pandemic. China would probably think out of the box in its retaliation, Hu said.
The US consulate in Chengdu opened in 1985 and is strategically important as it covers the countrys southwestern region, including the provinces of Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet autonomous region, and Chongqing.

Lets up the ante: Bring home all of our consulates except Guangzhou and Beijing. Close ALL ChiCom embassies in the US except NYC and DC, with minimal staffing only. Restrict the travels of all ChiCom diplomats exactly as they do our personnel in China.
What about the spy that the Chinese are harboring in their San Francisco embassy?
We really don’t want to lose the intelligence flow that can only come from Chinese embassies.
“Lets up the ante”
That is what I expect - just how the Administration will do so is the real mystery.
Nobody saw the Houston Consulate closing coming. The next escalation could be from a very different angle.
One rumor, is a US travel ban on all 92 million members of the Chinese communist Party, and their family members - revoking all their existing visas, pulling the kids out of school, disrupting their businesses, etc..
There would be hell to pay back home, for Winnie the Xi, trying to ‘splain that to all the aggravated rank and file.
It’s likely that embassy information flows are superfluous these days and are more useful in other ways than previously.
Current tech can be somewhat frightening in its capabilities, and I have little doubt those capabilities are being sought after and/or exploited by at least every capable government in existence.
Fact is, China has many many big problems. Many foreign businesses are leaving, the rainy season is killing them. They soon will come begging Trump for food stuffs to feed their people, if they can keep them under control?
Let's get back to keeping China at a distance, any business with them is a danger and treason.
Id kick all the Chinese out of the US and shut down all our diplomatic offices in China.
Everything that is published by the SCMP has been reviewed and approved by the CCP Ministry of Propaganda.
That said, I read the SCMP regularly.
This is all too orchestrated for me.
Looks like they’re going with the bipolar-war global superstructure again.
(And as Trump has been saying for decades, we should have taken a different course with China decades ago.)
The Wuhon consolate will soon be underwater when the TGD busts.
Up the ante by formally recognizing Taiwan. China may decide to close the consulates themselves.
Its one of those many instances where even a Communist-controlled news outlet reports more facts and less ideology than the American MSM. :)
Heheh. You are so right.
