Post-Brexit talks latest: UK abandons hope of US trade deal by end of year

The chances of Britain reaching a rapid post-Brexit trade agreement with the US are fast fading, with British officials conceding that a deal will not be struck ahead of November’s presidential election.

Last year, the Government said it believed agreement could be reached by July 2020, but that target is about to be missed because of the coronavirus pandemic and wrangling over such issues as the import of American agricultural products. The setback coincides with the apparent stalemate in negotiations with Brussels over a trade deal with the EU.

Although a third round of UK-US talks will begin via online video conference next week, one British official told the Financial Times: “Is it going to happen this year? Basically, no.” Liz Truss, the International Trade Secretary, has said there is “no set deadline” for a deal and Robert Lighthizer, the US trade representative, who is leading the talks for Washington, has said agreement is unlikely by November.

Johnson and the British government are playing the waiting game. It’s an election year here in the USA.
They are delaying until the outcome of our election takes place. They are holding out hope that Dementia Joe somehow becomes our president. As is most of the rest of the world.
Democrat subversives have been meeting with a great many countries telling them to not engage with President Trump. Wait. Be patient. When we regain power things will once again be in YOUR favor.
This is why even when Donald Trump is reelected its not game over. Our enemies and the Dems/RINO’s are plotting for the post Trump world. Just as they planned for the post Reagan world.
We who voted for Trump MUST be aware of this fact and guard against it or we will end up repeating the post Reagan history with the post Trump presidency.
My bet is the RINO’s will attempt to run a RINO Trojan Horse candidate to fool all of us who voted for Donald Trump.
The test will need to be was that candidate onboard from the beginning? Was that candidate a Trump supporter early on? Or, were they converts out of necessity?
The New World Order Globalists will not simply give up and go away. We must understand this and be on guard.

a lot of freepers last year were saying that there would be a UK-US trade deal nearly immediately after Brexit.

Well, Brexit happened on 31 Jan and no trade deal yet.

It’s not due to political games as much as the nitty-gritties of trade realities - the UK wants to protect its agriculture and manufacturing. This trade deal will take years - I’d say until 2023 to be finalized

Boris and Donnie are pretty tight and Boris does NOT want to see Creepy Joe in the White House.

I would bet there will be a trade deal sooner rather than later after Trump's Reelection. In the meantime, a temporary deal can be agreed to while the final deal is being negotiated.

I’ll take that bet. At this rate the deal would be most likely mid to end 2021. And no temporary deal

Whatever gave you the idea that Boris was tight with President Trump? Boris was among the leaders making fun of Trump.

You could say the same about Ted Cruz who stuck a long knife in Trump’s back during the primaries. Regardless, the current talk these days is that Boris is mimicking many of Trump’s policies. I follow a lot of British news and have seen Boris critics mention his close relationship with Trump. “The blondes.” IMO

Cruz was fighting Trump for the Presidency. Boris mocked Trump behind his back.
