Wow! I am hoping more of these cases are exposed.
But 99% of them are good patriotic hard working Americans and stuff. Yeah, sure.
I don’t feel sorry for the ‘little guys’ here, since they were all in on the scam (which was lending money to people when it was obvious that they could never pay it back). In fact the mortgage brokers had all the information needed to see the obvious (”So, you make $40,000 per year and in 5 years your exploding mortgage on this $350,000 house will require payments of $31,000 per year...hmmm, that makes sense, let’s ‘close the deal’”).
Don’t get me wrong - I’m still pissed that the bankers and the ratings agencies (who stamped off on the above mortgages and also had access to all the papers) didn’t pay a price, but the brokers were greedy sons of bitches - although they vote Republican, overall.
I was a small mortgage broker in 2008. By 2010 they had forced me out of business after 17 years of successful scrupulously honest business. As far as I know there are no small mortgage brokers left.
But the back story here is that in 1988 during the savings and loan debacle I was surpervising underwriter for a national mortgage company. One day we’re all in a company meeting and the regional VP remarked that there was a plan to get rid of all the small banks and mortgage wholesalers and end up with only 4-5 big banks that controlled all the lending. It took 20 years but here we are.
