Segway Inc is ending production of its two-wheeled personal transporter vehicle that gained popularity among tourists and some police forces, but found itself embroiled in mishaps with famous personalities.
Launched nearly two decades ago, the company will stop manufacturing the Segway PT starting July 15 as it shifts focus to other units such as its shared scooter business, it said on Tuesday. The model accounted for less than 1.5% of the Bedford, New Hampshire-based companys revenue last year.
In April 2015, Chinese transportation robotics firm Ninebot acquired the company, about half a year after Segway named Ninebot in a patent infringement complaint.

Not even Musk is as hopeful and wishful as you.
EVs have been around for way more than 100 years, and the promise of the replacing ICE cars is way overblown.
EVs will never match ICE vehicles for fuel-economy. But then, can you tell us what fuels up the electric batteries?
People don’t really care where the source of the energy is, I’m for convenience and speed. EV’s offer WAY more bang for the buck on performance and will shortly exceed conventional on range too. Those are my main concerns and probably most others’. Perhaps you’re a luddite, I prefer to look a few years ahead and see how quick things are changing socially, politically, and tech-wise.
It’s a little sad.
I’ve never tried one.
Dean Kamen is brilliant. The Segway is awesome. The Freestyle soda machine is excellent. And his desk is a mess. Sad that some American politicians do not listen to all the new inventions that can shows God’s care for us.
Karen is not dead. Are you saying the OWNER was different from the inventor?
Liberals always forget about bad weather and transportation.
So, NOT the inventor and only an owner for a short time.
You never mentioned the name in the OP.
I spotted a Segway tour group getting how-to instructions in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho a few days ago.
The combo soda machine is great in concept, but HORRID in execution.
All the drinks taste like something else because its mixing them.
Invariably, our cokes and root beers have a slice of lemon in them thanks to these travesties.
Its impractical ...if you want your drink to taste like the one you chose.
One of the dumbest and most over-hyped yuppie toys of all time.
Got to ride on one of the first Segway models once for about two minutes at a shopping mall. Loved it once I got a feel for balancing. They ended up using them for that same mall’s security team.
Dean Kamen is still alive, BTW, son of EC Comics artist Jack Kamen.
Ive got a Segway scooter, which is an excellent way to zip around Manhattan. Unfortunately its in my apartment in Manhattan where I havent been since March. When I do eventually go get it, I doubt it will be as fun on the dirt road we are on now.
I feel like this is burying the lede. How do you go from "you stole our patent" to "ok, buy us" without something shady going on? I'll be ready to ask the same question of pretty much everything amazon, Facebook and Google have been doing with their business acquisitions in the last ten years.
Dream on.
I’m putting it in my will that not even my hearse will be electric.
They can use my 500 HP ICE engine El Camino to do the job.
“IT” is over.
TXN has been a very reliable return on stock over any estimated time. They’re huge now, always has been since they invested the IC. I rode an elevator with Jack Kilby a few times who worked down the hall back in my very early career, a physical and mental giant of a man.
