Health officials in Philadelphia are calling the city’s spike in coronavirus cases a “second wave,” prompting an extension of bans on activities like indoor dining.
“The second wave has simply hit us right now,” Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley said, according to NBC 10.
This means the ban on activities like indoor dining will be extended until at least Sept. 1, according to reports. The city had been targeting Saturday as a potential date to reopen indoor dining. The rest of the state had been allowing indoor dining at 25 percent capacity, but this had not been re-established in Philadelphia.
Farley cited the reopening of states like Florida and Texas as a source of the surge in new cases in Philadelphia.
“Between March and May, there was an epidemic wave that more or less started in New York City and then spread south and west, hit Philadelphia on the way,” Farley told NBC 10. “Then after Southern states reopened too quickly and too recklessly, it’s a second wave that started there and then is spreading north and east from there. That wave’s now just arrived in Philadelphia.”
He also urged residents to avoid traveling to beaches, saying 27 percent of respondent’s in the city’s contact tracing program might have been infected while traveling out of state, and the Jersey Shore is a common destination.
Philadelphia had 142 new cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to date to 29,945 with 1,678 deaths, according to reports.
Farley does not believe there is much risk to Philadelphia residents from the city’s Major League Baseball team playing the Miami Marlins, reports indicate. Though the number of Marlins who tested positive for the coronavirus reached double digits, no Phillies have tested positive. Farley said the Marlins had little contact with city residents, presenting a low risk.

If Trump wins, expect even longer, although I honestly think if he stays, then medical professionals will go so far as to call the vaccine ineffective, just to keep him a bad person.
