FDA chief: Hydroxychloroquine use is a decision between doctor and patient

Stephen Hahn, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), on Thursday declined to take a definitive stance on whether people should take hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for the coronavirus, instead saying that decision should be made between a doctor and a patient.

"We had data that when this drug was combined with others, there was some risk associated with that. But the question you're asking me is a decision between a doctor and a patient," Hahn said on NBC's "Today" show.

"A doctor and a patient need to assess the data that's out there, FDA does not regulate the practice of medicine, and that in the privacy of the doctor-patient relationship is where that decision should be made."

Hydroxychloroquine was thrust back into the news this week after President Trump doubled down on his support for the drug in spite of medical evidence questioning its efficacy as a treatment for COVID-19 and raising concerns over possible side effects.

"It's safe. It doesn't cause problems. I had no problem. I had absolutely no problem," Trump told reporters Tuesday at the White House, referencing his own use of the drug for 14 days earlier this year. "It didn't get me, and it's not going to, hopefully, hurt anybody."

"Many doctors think it's extremely good, and some people don't," he added. "I think it's become very political."

The president also praised a doctor who appeared in a video he retweeted this week that praised the controversial drug as a COVID-19 treatment and said people don't need to wear masks. The video has since been removed from several platforms for violating misinformation policies.

The president's remarks flew in the face of warnings from health officials. The FDA withdrew an emergency authorization last month over growing evidence from several trials

“So how can it be illegal in Ohio??”

I have the same question.

It doesn’t seem constitutional to me.

It seems a constitutional issue.

The FDA only determines if a medicine or device meets the requirements that the producer claims and ensures they are doing so safely.

Doctors are not regulated by the FDA - they are licensed by the individual state boards... similar to how lawyers are licensed by passing state bar exams.

If a doctor fails to meet the state practice requirements then the STate board could call them up and potentially remove their license to practice. But the bar for doing so is high since there is a presumption that a doctor and patient have agreed to a course of treatment. The patient has additional recourse through malpractice suits but has to show the doc knowingy did not follow proper practice.

There are guidelines and recommendations- but the doc can use his best judgement.

Except it’s already been reversed.

That is a definitive stance, Mr. Author.

He’s speaking out of both sides of his mouth.

https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/fda-cautions-against-use-hydroxychloroquine-or-chloroquine-covid-19-outside-hospital-setting-or

Most doctors will not recommend (offer as an option) or prescribe, and insurances will not cover it because they will go off FDA/NIH guidelines or the standard of care.

Am I wrong?

RE: insurances will not cover it

Why does one need insurance to pay for a treatment that costs less than $30? Just pay for it yourself!

Of course it should be a decision between a doctor and patient..absolutely..problem is, the commie media has convinced so many people that this drug is harmful because Trump endorsed it and the commie media needs more people to die in order to hurt Trump, that they are terrified to prescribe it

All the commie celebrities and media buffoons already have the drug in their medicine cabinet. Amy Klobechar’s husband was saved because he used the drug..heck I believe that if you were to urine test Fauci I believe he’s taking it too, or already took it

Most antibiotics are cheap too. So insurance shouldn’t need to pay for those either?

I don’t get your argument.

FDA’s Stephen Hahn is sounding at best - a strained effort to an admittance on the drugs use. I dont hear bells for this “ringing” endorsement of Hydroxychloroquine.
