It’s not “sheer incompetence” - it’s a desire to win the election and save America from the far left fascists. If Trump fired people that both he AND the media declared to be the be-all-end-all in experts, the left would have a propaganda field day and it might well cost him the election. Better to let them spout whatever nonsense they want and ignore them.
