Maryland Catholic schools can reopen after governor overrides county

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) issued an emergency order on August 3 ensuring non-public schools, including Catholic schools, can make their own decisions regarding reopening for in-person instruction in the coming academic year.

The order, issued Monday, came after Montgomery County, the most populated county in the state, issued an order on July 31 prohibiting all non-public schools from opening for in-person classes before October 1.

Montgomery County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles said in Friday evening’s statement that “At this point the data does not suggest that in-person instruction is safe for students or teachers,” and that forcibly closing non-public schools was “necessary to protect the health and safety of Montgomery County residents” during the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the weekend, Hogan issued an initial response to the Montgomery County order, saying he “strongly disagreed” with the forced closure of all non-public schools. “As long as these schools develop safe plans that follow CDC and state guidelines, they should be empowered to do what’s best for their community,” Hogan said on Aug. 1.

Good news... I thought FReepers were saying Hogan is a RINO. Well, he seems decent enough to me. I can’t imagine a RAT governor, even a supposedly “Catholic” one, doing this.

Don’t be too impressed; Hogan is all too happy to shut everyone down again the moment the numbers don’t look the way he thinks they should. He’s been issuing just as many edicts from up on high as anyone else. But yes, in this one instance, he stood up against a mandate. Probably because they beat him to the punch.

As a Catholic school parent in neighboring Fairfax County... thanks be to God! I was very concerned our terrible county (which has the public schools closed for the fall) would take their lead. I’m still nervous our awful governor will take us back to Phase II in order to accomplish the same thing.

Fauxgan IS a RINO. He’s only a few steps removed from Fatty Fatty Pritzker, as far as I’m concerned, and probably just as corrupt.

Good indeed.

I’m wondering what’s going to happen here in Jacksonville. Gov. De Santis said that the schools should reopen for in-person learning, but our RINO mayor (the same one who basically cancelled the GOP convention) says that he’s going to “defy” DeSantis and keep our schools closed (“to protect the lives of the teachers,” hah hah).

The Catholic schools and a number of private schools were planning on reopening, so we shall see how far he dares to go In this direction with them. Lenny Curry needs a slap up the side of the head.

No, they wouldn't.

They're the ones ordering nursing homes to take sick patients and killing off all the old people.

I’ll bet his grandkids go to private school in Montgomery County.

Except for completely ignoring gun rights, being strongly pro-choice and breaking about 15 articles of the state and Federal Constitutions with his illegal “orders” he’s a great governor.

The fight is on

and the difference between Democrat and Republican states with regards to the schools it’s going to be very apparent

It’s going to be very clear to the American people that all the Democrats want to do is ruin the economy in anyway that they can because they think it’ll give him some electoral advantage

What they don’t realize they’re pissing a lot of Democrats off

“... in Montgomery County”.

MoCo’s health department and county council essentially told Hogan to pound sand and the private schools will remain closed. Not sure how this is going to play out but if I was a betting person.. I’d say the schools remain closed due to pressure. Just my two cents and being a MoCo resident

Hogan is bad but after rain tax Martin O Maley, any one could have been elected that promised to get rid of the hated rain tax.

But he didn’t get rid of it entirely. The bill that he signed into law merely allowed affected counties to opt out. Too bad for counties like Montgomery and PG - I’m sure that dumb tax is still quite safely in force there.

DeSantis should do the same to the Mayor as Hogan did to the Montgomery County PH Officer.
