The Mask Slackers of 1918
New York Times ^ | August 3, 2020 | Christine Hauser

As the influenza pandemic swept across the United States in 1918 and 1919, masks took a role in political and cultural wars.

The masks were called muzzles, germ shields and dirt traps. They gave people a “pig-like snout.” Some people snipped holes in their masks to smoke cigars. Others fastened them to dogs in mockery. Bandits used them to rob banks.

More than a century ago, as the 1918 influenza pandemic raged in the United States, masks of gauze and cheesecloth became the facial front lines in the battle against the virus. ...the masks stoked political division...medical authorities urged the wearing of masks to help slow the spread of disease...some people resisted.

In 1918 and 1919, as bars, saloons, restaurants, theaters and schools were closed, masks became a scapegoat, a symbol of government overreach, inspiring protests, petitions and defiant bare-face gatherings. All the while, thousands of Americans were dying in a deadly pandemic.

The first infections were identified in March, at an Army base in Kansas, where 100 soldiers were infected. Within a week, the number of flu cases grew fivefold, and soon the disease was taking hold across the country, prompting some cities to impose quarantines and mask orders to contain it.

By the fall of 1918, seven cities San Francisco, Seattle, Oakland, Sacramento, Denver, Indianapolis and Pasadena, Calif. had mandatory face mask laws...

Organized resistance to mask wearing was not common. “There were flare-ups, there were scuffles and there were occasional groups, like the Anti-Mask League, but that is the exception rather than the rule.”

At the forefront of the safety measures was San Francisco...By the end of October, there were more than 60,000 cases statewide, with 7,000 of them in San Francisco. It soon became known as the “masked city.”

“Still here we are 102 years later and the Anti-Maskers sound exactly the same. But Darwin Loves them.”

Master, the ignorant ones, sound the same. Nothing scientific about their claims but they think their contaminates snot rages magically protect them.

The dumbing down of America on display.

Wanna know who the idiots are? Just check for a mask.

“You have zero right to infect other people.”

Yet, you do. Your mask does not prevent that.

You sound exactly like a liberal I knew that claimed we do not have the fight to guns because he lives next door and we don’t have the right to have our guns go off and kill him.

Trying to associate orange vests for hunter safety to masks on our mouths is idiotic.

It does seem fitting the Wilson Democrats would favor the masks.

I consider myself very conservative but TBH I’ve become more sympathetic to the masks. I don’t like them, I think they’re socially toxic, and I think they play into the Democrats’ messaging. Nevertheless I now think they probably can have some practical effect on reducing the spread.

"The mask keep your Breathing/Lung particles close to you. The travel is greatly reduced."

No, it is not.

“Because they’re ignoring the mask policy and it’s not being enforced.”

Actually, California has a very high rate of compliance. In fact, it is #2 in the country for mask compliance. Only NY tops them - 67% to 64%.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/06/26/politics/maskwearing-coronavirus-analysis/index.html

So with the second highest mask compliance in the country, and a mandate in force since mid-June, has wearing masks done ANYTHING to slow the spread in California?

Nope. Not even a tiny bit. Didn’t even make a dimple in the spread!

“I understand the science, I’m a medical professional.”

No, you are not. You say the dumbest things that violate medical science.

“I hope you guys who think masks do nothing are consistent, and when hospitalized for surgery, you will insist that no doctors or nurses treating you wear masks.”

The presence of a mask is not what is effective. Medical professionals are trained to wear them properly and only for a short period of time. You wear your contaminated snot rag until it is gross and disgusting and spreads germs.

There simply is no comparison with the Spanish Flu and ridiculously weak COVID 19.

It depends. What is the point of wearing a mask where you have 100 infections among 600 thousand in population, like North Dakota, ect.?

My issue is not really with masks but the article conflating a real pandemic Spanish Flu, do a basically no show pandemic COVID 19 that has killed less than 1/10th of a percent of the world population.

Good post. Somewhere and sometime the entire population became lunatics who cannot appreciate perspective whatsoever. 1 out of 103 is the chance of dying in a car crash (albeit I have a hard time believing it could possibly be THAT high). We still jump in our car to get something we forgot at the grocery store.

Nah, let’s just cripple the economy so we can all live like its 1918. For a personal reference, I have had 4 people I know die in the last 6 months: 3 from over doses and 1 from heart disease. All family. I don’t know a SINGLE person who has died from COVID.

I know someone who knows someone whose second cousin knew someone who had a girlfriend’s great grandmother who died of Covid.

She was in hospice for Pancreatic Cancer at the time.
It was unexpected. 96. So young.
