Joe Arpaio loses bid for his old position as sheriff

Former Maricopa County, Ariz. Sheriff Joe Arpaio narrowly lost his campaign to get his old job back Friday, ending a nearly successful comeback for one of the state's most polarizing figures.

Arpaio, who held the position from 1993-2017, lost the GOP primary for the job to 40-year department veteran and Arpaio aide Jerry Sheridan by just over 6,000 votes when the Maricopa County Elections Department called the race. The two contenders were separated just 1 percent, 37-36.

Why is it that Dems are never considered “polarizing”?

Being sheriff WAS his life.

Don’t be surprised when he eats his gun.

First, having interacted with Joe in a long business conversation for a friend, I can tell you he is less than one step behind Biteme in the dementia department.

Second, I have great hesitation about voting for anyone who can’t quit running. I was reluctant to vote for Marquez-Peterson for the same reason. This is especially true of people like Kobach or Minion Romney. What the heck is it that people can’t get the hell out of politics?

Third, like him or not, the fact is that with him off the ballot, it smooths the way for Trump and McSally, as there will be fewer Hispanics who disliked him driven to come out in large numbers. This should benefit the GOP ticket overall.

Now, if we can get Schweikert off the front page.

He certainly does. But it says he was in the position 40 years, but the last two or so he got bad press. The other 38 he seemed acceptable for voters and media. I just think it amazing how people turn on people so quickly.

I love Joe but he’s 88 years old. Time to retire.

Oh yeah. I’d never want to be working at that age or even at 50 to be honest. Lol.

Oh no Joe generated bad press through his entire run. Just enough people kept ignoring it for him to win. The simple fact is he’s a jerk, was a crap sheriff, wasted a ton of money on things to make him look tough, probably corrupt, and the county is better off without him.

Schweikert is royally PO’d that his ‘ethics problem’ wasn’t resolved last year. The Dem House held it up for this election. It was mentioned in the reporting of the election in AZ Central, I think, They also mentioned that Tipirneni doesn’t even live in the District. She also has over a million in her warchest. Schweikert only about 1/4 million. The Republican Party is financially ignoring Schweikert. Do they even want to win the House?

Schweikert is a good guy. I pray he wins.

If I recall correctly, there was a long period where people associated with him on that topic (Mike Zullo and someone else whose name I've forgotten) ran a near-constant stream of "Bombshell coming up!" "Soon to be revealed!" "Earth-shattering news coming!" Only, I don't recall any earth-shattering news being released. Seemed to always be "just around the corner".

Damn it, still having trouble with correctly italicizing quotes. I may go back to the old way of just using quotation marks @the beginning & the end of the quoted text.

All — thanks for your patience. It’s much appreciated.

PS-I voted for Sheridan. I dislike Penzone and Arpaio didn’t win last time. But I do fear ‘he who counts the votes’. Remember the Presidential Poll in March, 2016? Reagan (R), Maricopa County Recorder, didn’t open enough polling stations and the wait to vote in some places was 2 hours. Fontes (D), now the Maricopa County Recorder, won his election even though he was sponsored by OurRevolution. And in 2018, the Republicans didn’t do well. This state may be turning Blue, but it is getting a BIG helping hand from the Dems who took control in 2016. Out of 9 House seats, the Dems have 5. WE used to have the majority. And the Leftists in Tucson are part one the problem, too.

Yep things change over the ages. Look what happened to the
native Americans after Columbus sailed the ocean blue.
