Lebanon PM Hassan Diab resigns on live national TV

Lebanon’s embattled prime minister announced his resignation on live national TV on Monday — as his cabinet headed for the door amid widespread unrest over the deadly explosion at Beirut’s port last week.

“We are still living amid the horror that struck Lebanon and the Lebanese to the core, which was the result of severe corruption in the administration,” PM Hassan Diab said in his speech, according to a tweet by MTV English News.

At least 220 people died in Tuesday’s explosion, which leveled swaths of the city. It is believed to have been caused by an accidental fire ignited by mounds of fertilizer that had been stored at a warehouse there since 2013. The fertilizer had been seized by a Russian cargo ship.

It was not fertilizer. It was Ammonium Nitrate explosive which is what it was purchased for and is used for in 80% or more for all mining and earthwork explosive uses. It was purchased by a mining company in Mozambique Africa from Russia and sailed from a Georgian port in the Black Sea and the ship broke down in the Mediterranean and ported in Lebanon instead of going through the Suez Canal. The shipping company did not pay the crew and went bankrupt and Lebanon confiscated the dangerous cargo. The ship later left Lebanon and was sunk off the coast and likely scuttled on purpose.

Who was behind keeping this stuff in the heart of the city, or why was the explosive dangerous cargo never removed? Hezbollah? Iran? Russia? Local farmers were stealing material from an open metal door they cut into. A work crew with an acetylene torch was welding the whole shut when they started the fire.
