You've misremembered the event. The four PRs shot up the House in 1954.

There were two Puerto Rican nationalists that attempted to assassinate President Truman at the Blair house across the street from the White House which was undergoing extensive repairs.

The Hunter and Bainbridge book is a fascinating read. The gunmen started shooting at the police guard station in front of the Blair House. Truman heard the gun shots, looked out the window and started storming down the stairs angry as hell and ready to counterattack....stopped only by the remaining SS agent in the Blair House.

Not misremembering anything. I didn’t say it happened at the WH, which was being renovated at the time, and why Harry was in Blair House in the first place, where the PRs figured he’d be vulnerable. It was an assault on the POTUS. The two PRs assumed room temperature, and so did one guard. Truman wad kept safe.

This incident was badly planned and executed. I bet the little dip shit thought the SS and passersby and the whole press corp would cheerfully help him kill the President and then dance around with glee afterwards.
