History can be very strange and confusing; the WEST VIRGINIA side of my family, was during that time, busy killing their brothers and cousins on the VIRGINIA side of my family.

And the VIRGINIA side of my family was pretty busy killing their brothers and cousins on the WEST VIRGINIA side.

Very strange when you think about it.

The Declaration of Independence said the South had a right to secede and to build whatever system of governance they chose. Lincoln felt it was in his power to force them to stay, against their will. He called for volunteers to raise an army to compel their compliance. That is aggression and tyranny, pure and simple. Southerners rose up in their thousands to resist it.

Battle determined the outcome. 620,000 men and untold numbers of civilians died in an awful civil war. And the brave and principled soldiers on both sides who sacrificed their lives, limbs and livelihoods deserve respect and remembrance.

No it didn't. You even quote the conditional statement that allows righteous rebellion (and was NOT the case in 1860): "That, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it..."

The only destruction by or of government in 1860 was perpetrated by the rebels.

Your opinion, not shared by the majority of 1860 southerners, nor supported by the historical facts. You simply want to blame the south, using contemporary pseudo history. We’ll just have to agree to disagree.

My Confederate great-great-grandfather lived in Frederick Co., VA, a few miles from what became the border with West Virginia. I think most of the men in the two easternmost counties of West Virginia (Berkeley and Jefferson) were loyal to Virginia but those counties were belatedly added to WV (I read somewhere it was because the B&O Railroad would be able to collect for war damages if its track was in a "loyal" state rather than a "rebel" state).

I had cousins in the southern part of West Virginia who fought for the Confederacy--they still considered themselves to be in Virginia. I think most of the southern counties of WV did not participate in the 1864 federal election.
