U.S. Grant’s wife owned slaves and by the laws of the day, that made Grant a slave holder as well.
He was given a slave by his father-in-law to help him on his homestead. He worked alongside him and then went down and filled out the paperwork to set him free.
He was not a Republican until after the war.
