It ensured that small, rural states would retain importance in national elections.

That may be a result. BUT: It made states equal, as the independent entities they were. We are called united states for a reason.

Both sides but especially the demschsve forgotten the old political adage: never take a power you do not want your opponent to use against you.

Not a chance. The dims want to change the rules to ensure that the repubs never again have any sort of political power.
