For once, I am going to agree with President Trump in his use of his favorite adjective: huge.
The agreement brokered by the Trump administration for the United Arab Emirates to establish full normalization of relations with Israel, in return for the Jewish state forgoing, for now, any annexation of the West Bank, was exactly what Trump said it was in his tweet: a HUGE breakthrough.
I have followed the Middle East for too long to ever write the sentence the region will never be the same again. The forces of sectarianism, tribalism, corruption and anti-pluralism run deep there. But there are other currents young men and women who are just so tired of the old game, the old fights, the old wounds being stoked over and over again. You could see them demonstrating all over the streets of Beirut last week demanding good governance and a chance to realize their full potential.
The U.A.E. and Israel and the U.S. on Thursday showed at least for one brief shining moment that the past does not always have to bury the future, that the haters and dividers dont always have to win.
It was a breath of fresh air. May it one day soon turn into a howling wind of change that spreads across the whole region.

How did the New York Times allow this in there paper..
Friedman wrote this?
Jared Kushner must be the antichrist... i knew that birthmark was upside down.
No, your ridiculous disparagement indicates your lack of understanding of what took place
Buckle-up because the Jew-hating Islamofascists are not going to sit idly by for this. Look for violence and assassinations to be ramped-up.
Yawn.
This is one of the biggest victories in the Trump administration.
The NYT?
Has hell frozen over???
You know, sometimes a YAWNER, who is constantly yawning, becomes a bore.
This is SO BIG, that even the New York Times had to admit it. It made my heart sing when I read it. Sing.
It was a breath of fresh air. May it one day soon turn into a howling wind of change that spreads across the whole region.
Freidman? holy moly, if the main stream climbs on board of this the Trump train rolls in Nov
Through a FOIA request, the negotiations have become public:
Trump: “I’m asking you to put aside a millennium of hatred and support our friend Israel.
Mohammed bin Zayed: “Would a gazelle support the Lion? Would a zebra support the Hyena?”
Trump: “What the heck are you talking about? I think you’ve been doing too many of those cognition tests.”
Mohammed bin Zayed: Let me put it in terms you would understand: Would the New York Times praise Donald Trump?”
Trump: Good point.
Mohammed bin Zayed: You see, the world turns and people change. But some things will never happen. So I tell you, when the New York Times praises Donald Trump, then will the Arab world make peace Israel.
Trump: It’s a deal!
It has nothing to do with us, it's a distraction from our real problems, and when (as is inevitable) some sort of enforcement becomes necessary, it's going to involve more dead Americans.
The war is here.
Look for an apology and another editor firing.
I don’t mean it was BIG to the MSM.
It was big for the little step it takes to peace.
your lack of a sense of humor is indication of a thin skin...
sheesh... lighten up francis.
The test of how big the Israel-UAE agreement is will be proven, or deflate, in time, depending on how and if it leads to similar agreements with other Arab Middle East states that don’t have state-to-state relations with Israel,
There is a double edged sword that can be held on Israel with such agreements however.
The agreement can be rescinded, by the UAE, and the possibility of it gives the UAE some (little right now) ability to influence Israel’s decisions concerning Judea-Samaria/West Bank. That kind of influence would mount if other Arab states made similar agreements with Israel.
Thirty-one UN member states do not recognize Israel. These include 19 of the 22 members of the Arab League: Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen.
Israel wants state to state full recognition across the Middle East, but obtaining it, and more importantly keeping it, may come at a cost.
Right now I think the agreement is more about the Mullahs in Tehran, who are enemies of both the UAE and Israel. What if the religious proxy wars between the Shia of Iran and the Arab Sunnis ended, by some way or another??
I think that’s quite a leap. Sorry, I am thrilled for every little piece of good news.
