Pompeo inks deal to support more US troops in Poland

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo sealed a defense cooperation deal Saturday with Polish officials that will pave the way to deploy more American troops to Poland.

Pompeo, in Warsaw at the end of a four-nation tour of central and eastern Europe, signed the deal with Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak that sets out the legal framework for the additional troops.

“This is going to be an extended guarantee: a guarantee that in case of a threat our soldiers are going to stand arm-in-arm,” Poland’s President Andrzej Duda said during the signing ceremony. “It will also serve to increase the security of other countries in our part of Europe.”

The deal would also further other aspects of U.S.-Polish cooperation, he added, citing primarily investment and trade ties.

Some 4,500 U.S. troops are currently based in Poland, but about 1,000 more are to be added. Last month, in line with President Donald Trump’s demand to reduce troop numbers in Germany, the Pentagon announced that 12,000 troops would be withdrawn from Germany with about 5,600 moving to other countries in Europe, including Poland.

In addition, several U.S. military commands will be moved out of Germany, including the U.S. Army V Corps overseas headquarters that will relocate to Poland next year.

The deal would also further other aspects of U.S.-Polish cooperation, he added, citing primarily investment and trade ties. …

I was a chaperone for World Youth Day 2016 (Catholic) in Krakow. I can’t say enough good things about the wonderful hospitality of the Polish people. Our SoCal teens loved it and were very impressed.

Poland is the ONLY country you could talk me into traveling to these days.

Glad I got to see some of Europe prior to the muzzie invasions. :(

Sure, just hand the EUSSR what they’ve always wanted.

some beautiful country. some beautiful women. I think perhaps the greatest propeganda story of the cold war was the way we were all made to beleive that women behind the iron curtain were shrunken trolls in babushkas with moles on their faces and unibrows. Nobody wanted to defect to that!

Then the Berlin wall fell and soon after most of the supermodels came from Eastern Europe. Wait, what? They were that gorgeous all along?

There is no more reason to have US forces in Poland, than there is in Germany...or Latvia...or Bulgaria...or Romania etc.

Our commercial interests are minimal, and our political interests are better served elsewhere.

The USA leaving is exactly what the EUSSR wants. They have had a plan in place for decades to unite the militaries of all of the member states under a single command, led by the German high command; and leaving them free to do that means that it will come together very rapidly.

The very notion of a united Europe is about anti-Americanism. Leaving them free to create their anti-US military cannot be, and is not, a plus for US interests to say the very least (and that’s even understating it).

I do disagree.

It puts them in a position to provide their own security without any US resources.

I have no fear of democratic states joining together without us. Especially THIS group of feckless and unserious louts.

We have existential interests elsewhere.

The Russian ‘bear’ is the real menace to Europe. Thank God that all of Russia’s neighbors have a bad taste in their mouths because of what Russia has done to them.

Our troops get more respect from Poles than they do in Portland.

Already reports of using non EU troops by the German defense. German knows they have few men...and so does most of Europe.

Germany is anxious to bring in the Russians. Eastern Europe won’t stand by and idle.
