CHICAGO—Three days after his 29-year-old son was shot and killed, Keith Harris joined a group of residents who clashed with protesters during a demonstration outside the Chicago Police Department’s Seventh District station in the Englewood neighborhood.
The turbulent confrontation last week pitted demonstrators seeking to defund the police against crime-weary residents who say they want the department to better serve them. “I don’t see how defunding the police is going to help anything in Englewood,” said Mr. Harris, 53 years old.
A day later, Mr. Harris made funeral arrangements for his son, Keith Richmond. “I’m the last person who would be a police cheerleader, because I’ve had my own run-ins with them,” he said. But, he added, “What are you going to do when they’re not there to protect you?”
The Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side is the kind of community that activists say they are fighting to help—a poverty-stricken, mostly Black area with endemic crime. There have been 200 shootings this year in Englewood, an 80% increase over the same period in 2019.
Yet an increasingly vocal number of business owners, community leaders and residents say they are tiring of calls to defund police departments, viewing protesters largely as outsiders unwilling to do the hands-on work they say is required to improve Black communities.
Black leaders in other cities have pushed back against activist demands to shrink or abolish police departments. In New York and New Jersey, some Black and Latino lawmakers recently urged their colleagues to hold off on proposals to slash police budgets.
Nearly nine in 10 Black Americans said major changes were needed to overhaul policing in the U.S., according to a recent poll from the Gallup Center on Black Voices.

My sister and I have been saying this for ages. NONE of them actually go into minority communities and do the heavy lifting of improving the lives of people there. My sister has been a math teacher for over 40 years, the last ten of which have been in inner city downtown Baltimore teaching math to mainly black middle school kids. She walks the talk and has many kids come back and tell her years later what a difference she made in their lives. She gives so much to those kids and reaps the reward of knowing that she made a big difference in the lives of many of her students.
Do ANY BLMers or antifa or even many Democrats ever make the same sacrifice and difference? Never. Not in a million years.
There seems to be a refusal in certain political circles known as the Swamp to blame the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) for deliberately using the Wuhan virus to create an economy here which would prevent Trump get reelected. Letting that happen will create problems we don’t need. Time we point out the loss of employment and the corruption involved.

Which had previously included adjacent Chicago city wards to his 23rd in a district that dealt exclusively with city issues such as a subway L service and the Stevenson Expressway Wards which were reliable Dan’s father William O Lipinski supporters. But since most had areas with hispanic last names those areas were redistricted and assigned to Gutieriez’s district. During the Charlotte riots a couple years back. The protesters were flooding in from out of state.

This isn’t surprising, as many of those communities don’t pay their police departments - the surrounding suburbs do it for them. Disbanding or reducing their police won’t provide a windfall of cash for community activists and aspiring rappers; it will simply reduce the subsidy the surrounding working communities pay for their bills.
Also, many of those areas (at least in NJ) don’t have wealthy sections where BLM and Antifa could loot; most cities here have no upper class neighborhoods at all. The sole exception is probably Jersey City, where the wealthy moving in from NYC would NEVER defund the police - and they’d leave (taking their wealth with them) if it ever happened.
Those who are most preyed upon by criminals want police, why are so many shocked?
Could the police be improved? Certainly.
Improving the police requires something much more than a bumper sticker though. BLM and Antifa are both predators and lazy. Also there needs to be improvements in aspects of the criminal justice system besides the police.
Improving the police requires answering a wicked question: What are the metrics of a well run police dept? Has BLM even attempted to put out an answer to this question?
The Democrat power structure does not want to face the second problem: How quickly can a dept remove a negatively performing officer?
Third issue: Effectively every law enforcement agency has to deal with someone in the government they respond to that believes their purpose is revenue, not public safety. This results in unhelpful metrics.
As for Chicago, are there any Republicans left in the city and, if so, are they willing to run against the Democraptic machine on such a platform?
