I suspect he was a dopehead.

Yeah. Creep was the wrong word. “criminally inclined” would have been better.
What happened to him is on him. And that is made crystal clear when one sees the full bodycam footage. Actions have consequences.
And he died, apparently, of a drug overdose, not the way the cops treated him.
