They are good! I became a Joe Ely fan after his original Flatlanders days. I got into JDG because I was curious: Who is this guy, that Joe does so many of his songs?

I saw Joe at 'Nick's' in Dallas, on upper Greenville in the mid 80's. Halfway through the set, Butch joined him. Still later Delbert McClinton stepped in.

I was a Joe Ely fan for years before I knew who JDG was. ‘Dallas’ by Joe Ely was one of his best, IMHO. Then I looked up the writer’s version, JDG’s was uniquely different. I then became a fan of JDG. The two versions are both very good, yet distinctly different. Here they are for comparison.
