ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE

Good morning this rainy Sunday! This morning someone asked me, "How do you like the lousy weather, Chaplain?" I thought a moment about the fact that my uniform was wet, my car had trouble starting, and about all those poor people stuck in the wall of traffic that inevitably occurs when 58 gets drenched. Then later I thought, how would we exist without the rain which makes all life on our planet possible? I remembered the old prayer in my prayer book, a blessing to God for the gift of wind and rain.

There is an old story, a beautiful story, about a boy who came home famished after long hours of play with his friends. His mother served him some sandwiches which satisfied his hunger and caused him to thank his mom. She said, "Don't thank me, son, I only prepared the food." So he went to the grocer to thank him for the bread. "Don't thank me, young man, I only sell the food." He walked over to the baker and thanked him. "Son, you're thanking the wrong person, I only bake the bread." Wondering whom to thank, the boy went to the farmer to thank him. "Thank you for the fine bread that I eat every day," he said. "Don't thank me, my friend, I only plant the seeds. The earth, sunshine, rain, and wind make the wheat grow, not I.

By now the boy was tired and hungry so the farmer invited him to join his family for dinner. As they were seated around the table, each person took a piece of bread from the basket and said together: Praised be Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who brings bread out of the earth."

So, today, let's thank God for the sunny days and the rainy ones, too--as well as for the food He gives us. Each day is truly a blessing!

Chaplain Mitch Schranz

"Praised be Thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, Who brings bread out of the earth." "

The farmer was Jewish? :-) here is that prayer in Hebrew:

Transliteration:

Baruch atah, Adonai Eloheinu, Melech haolam, haMotzi lechem min haaretz.

Translation:

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth

Nice story, BTW! :-)

Don’t know about the farmer being Jewish but Jesus certainly was and that was almost certainly the prayer He spoke in John 6 (and parallels) before he broke the loaves to feed the 5000.

And again at the Last Supper before saying “Take, eat, this is My Body given for you.”

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...a Blessed Lord’s Day and Shavua Tov to you and yours.

More rain for you...more quality time with Penny. Blue will understand.

We are supposed to get some of that liquid sunshine as well. And a High Wind Advisory just popped up. I HATE sustained high winds. We don’t have hurricanes here, but at times hurricane winds.

There is yellow on the weather radar coming this way. Hopefully it will drop some of that wet stuff and reduce the fire danger.

"but at times hurricane winds."

And I'll bet they are not warm and balmy tropical winds either.

Self-Checking

Bible in a Year:

Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.

Lamentations 3:40

Recently I read through a stack of World War II-era letters my dad sent to my mother. He was in North Africa and she was in West Virginia. Dad, a second lieutenant in the US Army, was tasked with censoring soldiers’ letters—keeping sensitive information from enemy eyes. So it was rather humorous to see—on the outside of his letters to his wife—a stamp that said, “Censored by 2nd Lt. John Branon.” Indeed, he had cut out lines from his own letters!

Self-censoring is really a good idea for all of us. Several times in Scripture, the writers mention the importance of taking a good long look at ourselves to find what’s not right—not God-honoring. The psalmist, for example, prayed, “Search me, God, and know my heart . . . . See if there is any offensive way in me” (Psalm 139:23–24). Jeremiah put it like this: “Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord” (Lamentations 3:40). And Paul, speaking of our heart condition at the time of communion, said, “Everyone ought to examine themselves” (1 Corinthians 11:28).

The Holy Spirit can help us turn from any attitudes or actions that don’t please God. So before we head out into the world today, let’s stop and seek the Spirit’s help in doing some self-checking so we can “return to the Lord” in fellowship with Him.

By:  Dave Branon Reflect & Pray

How will you pursue healthy spiritual self-examination today? What are two things that come to mind that you could remove to improve your fellowship with God?

Search me, O God, and know my heart. See if there are any changes I need to make today as I seek to know You more and serve You better.

Dear God:
I ask that no Airman, Coast Guardsman,
Marine, Sailor, Soldier, Reservist, National Guardsman, or Merchant Marine
feel alone or forgotten.

O Israel, hope in the Lord;
For with the Lord there is loving kindness,
And with Him is abundant redemption.
And He will redeem Israel
From all his iniquities.

Psalm 130:7 & 8
