Hospitals getting 20% add-on money for every "COVID-19 patient". Is this where they come up with that 20% figure?

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Government; News/Current Events; Politics/Elections

Here is the link to download the pdf that seems to explain where the 20% add-on comes from. Very vague and it could be a complete coincidence that the estimated cost of a ventilated covid-19 patient is 20% higher than average non covid-19 patient.

Any help in interpreting this would be appreciated.

"The incremental cost of a COVID-19 hospitalization. For the second component, patients were segmented into two cohorts based on available clinical data: those who require mechanical ventilation and those who do not. Because mechanical ventilation use is often a sign of significant morbidity and impending mortality, the costs associated with its use are much higher than for patients who do not require that level of treatment. Therefore, total costs of treatment were estimated separately for patients who require mechanical ventilation and those who do not based on a set of corresponding diagnosis groups (DRGs) commonly used in payment for inpatient hospital services. These separate costs were then blended based on literature suggesting that only 20% of COVID-19 hospitalizations require ventilator use.29 Rather than focusing on the total cost of COVID-19 treatment, the incremental cost of a COVID-19 hospitalization was then calculated."

But the hospitals are already getting $38,000 per COVID patient, aren’t they?

No wonder anyone with one virus bug is listed as a “case.” No wonder anyone with one virus bug in his nose when passing away is listed as a “Covid-19 death.”

That’s why the cases are listed so quickly, but fully about half are listed as active cases. Now we find the about 95% are from too sensitive tests.

6 trillion dollars and counting.

I think the amount is a little less than that, but all that is, is what Medicare will pay for the treatment of a covid patient. It is NOT a bounty. Medicare does exactly the same thing for fractures, sinus infections, rashes, whatever.

That’s not really clear to me, it could be that dollar amount represents the 20% add-on. The info I was looking through didn’t refer to a specific $, just the % add-on.

It’s like everything else they charge. It does not reflect the actual cost but only what the bureaucrats will let them get away with charging. This is what happens when the government controls the pricing.
