Is China On The ‘Brink’ Of A Major Food Shortage?
Nation And State ^ | 9-6-2020

China recently launched the “Clean Plate Campaign,” which targets people wasting food, as speculation of a worldwide food shortage mounts.

President Xi Jinping has pushed new measures to curb food waste following the virus pandemic, calling those who live stream their eating experiences on social media as “shocking and distressing.”

Too strict or not strict enough? A recent @CNN article says the “authoritarian” China wants to control what people eat with its new “clean plate” campaign, but also suggests the campaign isn’t specific enough. It’s too confusing! Seems like China can do no right! pic.twitter.com/RRDZLmFo98

Jinping said China had to “maintain a sense of crisis about food security” amid the virus pandemic. The warning comes as the world’s second-largest economy could soon face food shortages. Besides the virus-induced economic downturn disrupting food supply chains, there’s been droughts, floods, and pests that are likely to result in poor harvests this year.

Chinese state news agency, the Global Times, downplayed the notion China is headed for a food crisis. Some restaurants in China have limited the number of dishes served to diners, while others have weighed customers before ordering.

Estimates show China wastes enough food to feed 30 to 50 million people per year, according to a study published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the World Wildlife Fund in China. The government’s abrupt crackdown on food waste suggests a shortage could be nearing:

But the campaign [Clean Plate Campaign] has raised speculation China could be facing a food shortage, although state media outlets were quick to try and stop the panic of imminent food shortages, reporting that China had recently seen consecutive bumper grain harvests and record high grain output.

As living standards have raised, so has consumption. Obesity levels have soared...

Starvation’s a commie control tactic...

BLM and Antifa are commie organizations - starvation causes chaos... So yeah, democrats will likely use it a month or so before the election.

Brink, hell, they’re in the middle of it.

America grows its own food, and lots more than we need. China doesn’t, has to import.

What a silly headline. As long as China has sufficient monetary assets she buys food on the world market as we all do.

Sometimes we are buying and sometimes we are selling. Due to the USA's most incredible farming system we are sellers and not buyers.

No, this is specifically a China problem.

They had to kill a lot of chickens due to avian flu, they had to kill a lot of pigs due to swine flu, and thought they were going to buy the replacement food from us. Then the pandemic hit and ships were staying away from China.

Now we are in a trade “war” with the Chinese and other people have stopped selling to them also. The typhoon didn’t help.

They are looking at a very bleak future if they do not accept the reality of their actions.

Was thinking the same thing.

When China won’t ship back our chickens we will only start to realize how much food actually comes from them.

China has immense reserves of foreign capital, and a vast fleet of container ships. There may be price shocks, and shortages of certain foods, but no one with a job is going to be malnourished, much less starve.

But that just means that China has the money and ships to buy its way out of its own sudden shortfalls in food production. Globally, the shortfall still exists, and it will be felt by those least able to compete financially with China in the grain markets. Belt tightening time for the Arab world.

Stressed, but not yet.

The You tube poster thinks there is erosion under the base of the dam. This has been speculated for some time.

Somewhere I read that as engineered, they did not provide a way to sluice out sediment/silt building up behind the dam. I would assume—I am not an engineer—that as time passes there is increasing silt build up, and the total volume of water that can be held by the catchment is reduced.

Still waiting to see what happens, I guess.

Coming to America.

Count on it.

Baloney.

We produce 20% more food than Americans can eat right now, and could produce half again as much if the market signaled the need.

Why do you think the exports to China are so important to President Trump?

It's because the United States is awash in food stuffs, and exports are critical to keeping American Farmers not just profitable, but to keep them from going broke because food prices would fall into the basement without exports, and the farmers would go bankrupt.
