NJ officer dies hours after jumping into river to save burglary suspect

A veteran New Jersey police officer jumped into a river to save a burglary suspect -- and then died hours later.

Bridgeton Police Department officer Sean Peek, 49, responded to a burglary call at an ambulance station around 1:30 a.m. Sunday when he saw a person running through the woods and then either fall or jump into the Cohansey River, authorities said.

“Sean made a decision as would any officer and entered to water in [an] attempt to pull the person from the running waters no matter what the circumstances,” Police Chief Michael Gaimari Sr. said Monday. “The woman eventually made it across the river but Officer Peek had difficulty making it back to shore as he was still donning all of his equipment and gear.”

???

Heart attack?

“Peek was pulled from the river by other officers and then went to the hospital where he was treated and released. He then signed out and went home.”

Probably over burdened by all the ‘safety gear’ mandated these days.

So does the suspect get charged with felony murder - death caused during commission of a crime?

[...] Officer Peek had difficulty making it back to shore as he was still donning all of his equipment and gear."

His mistake was in continuing to put on his equipment and gear.

Yuh see, he wasn't just wearing heavy gear - he was actually still putting it on!

Regards,

To don: To put on (not "to wear").

Thank you for the post. Goes to show how or officers - not all of whom are “heroes,” - sacrifice their lives every day to keep us safe from criminals, but also keep criminals safe.

I suspect, as a rescue diver who has experienced serious stress after extreme (to me,) water situations, that he was released from the hospital, was “feeling fine,” but was holding a fibrillation time-bomb.

Overexertion, psychological stress, professional stress, oxygen problems, preconditions for stroke, machismo that comes with the job, pre-existing heart problems, a few shots of booze...

Anyway, seems to me this is one who could be called a real “hero.”

His story will be ignored by the lamestream media.

Oh, you are so mean to expect clear writing.

Yeah, I got a visual of the policeman putting on his bulletproof vest while still attempting to perform the breast stroke.

Read the story again.

The reporter is quoting the police chief.
That’s why the statement is in quotation marks.
