In many ways the Chinese have dumped communism for old fashioned authoritarianism. You can run a business and become a billionaire in China, just so long as you don't cause the government trouble and spend your money greasing the right palms. Meanwhile we have politicians who say that no one should become a billionaire.

You have to have the absolute control before you start doling out the freedoms. Sounds like the Chinese are just plain old fascists. Keeping the lid on a billion people requires some flexibility, I suppose. Our homegrown authoritarians would do well to remember that they haven’t disarmed the populace, just yet. I have to wonder if they aren’t trying to provoke armed conflict as a means of doing just that. Interesting times.
