Trump unveils Supreme Court list, includes Cruz and Cotton
The Hill ^ | 09 09 2020 | Morgan Chalfant and John Kruzel

Posted on 09/09/2020 2:10:34 PM PDT by yesthatjallen

President Trump on Wednesday announced an updated list of potential nominees to the Supreme Court that included three Republican U.S. senators and his former solicitor general.

Trump announced 20 additional potential nominees that would be added to a list of candidates for the Supreme Court, including Sens. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) and Noel Francisco, who departed as solicitor general in June.

The move represents a bid to shore up his support among conservatives two months from the 2020 presidential election. In remarks at the White House, Trump warned that religious liberty, freedom of speech and the right to bear arms are all at risk if Democrats win the election, asserting that they would appoint “radical” justices to the high court.

“Over the next four years, America’s president will choose hundreds of federal judges and in all likelihood, one, two, three and even four Supreme Court justices,” Trump said in remarks from the Diplomatic Reception Room at the White House.

“The outcome of these decisions will determine whether we hold fast to our nation’s founding principles or whether they are lost forever,” Trump continued.

Is Cruz an attorney? Do you have to be to be confirmed?

Cruz is an attorney.
You don’t have to be an attorney for SCOTUS.

Mark Levin manages to put on a daily radio show along with a weekly TV interview program. He’s published several books and is in lockstep with the constitution. Plus he’s hilarious.

No thanks.

We know Roberts can be manipulated/blackmailed, at least by libs, but presumably by the highest bidder. Maybe he could be convinced to go away.

President then takes a number of insulting questions from reporters saying he misled the public, and he doesn’t challenge the premise at all. Why not start by saying, “I don’t mislead the public.”

“ya....let’s vote for Biden.....”

You shouldn’t post drunk or stupid. NO one was talking about voting for anyone.

That may be your definition of “natural born citizen”, but it is not so stipulated in the Constitution, which does not define the term. Leaving the matter to the discretion of Congress.

The operative law being 8 USC 1401 “(g)a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than five years, at least two of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years:”

Yeah, someone could challenge that and it would go to SCOTUS, but a plain-language reading seems rather dispositive.

At the time the phrase was written, the phrase was known. So, no, it was not up to interpretation.

Cruz would be a superb SC justice pick - that’s one guy I’d never need to worry about backsliding or betraying conservatives. We need outspoken right-wing activists on the court - I’ve had enough of the “strict textualist” BS.

Cruz wasn’t a natural born citizen

His mother is (was?) a US citizen.

Opinions, for the most part, concur that Cruz is eligible to serve as President of the United States; most constitutional scholars surveyed by Politico believe that he is eligible, and "a small, but vocal group" has issued challenges that he is not. According to a memo from the Congressional Research Service, "The weight of scholarly legal and historical opinion appears to support the notion that 'natural born Citizen' means one who is entitled under the Constitution or laws of the United States to U.S. citizenship 'at birth' or 'by birth,' including... those born abroad of one citizen parent who has met U.S. residency requirements."
