Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. is located at the corner of 8th and I Streets, Southeast in Washington, D.C. Established in 1801, it is a National Historic Landmark, the oldest post in the United States Marine Corps, the official residence of the Commandant of the Marine Corps since 1806, and main ceremonial grounds of the Corps.

It is also home to the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps and the U.S. Marine Band. Barracks Marines conduct ceremonial missions in and around the National Capital Region as well as abroad.

Company A is comprised of 1st and 2nd Platoon, which are ceremonial marching platoons, the Silent Drill Platoon, and the Marine Corps Color Guard Platoon. The Marines of Company A have the mission of executing all ceremonial commitments directed by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, and preparing for future service in the Marine Corps’ operating forces.

Ceremonial commitments include Marine Corps funerals at Arlington National Cemetery and Joint Service Ceremonies at venues such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the White House, the Pentagon, and other high visibility venues across the National Capitol Region. Throughout the summer, the Marines of Company A also march in Sunset and Evening Parades, every Tuesday and Friday respectively.

DCmbmcb4

The Marines of Company A are infantryman that are hand-selected from the School of Infantry to serve at Marine Barracks Washington for at least two years. The leadership of Company A, Officers and Staff Non-Commissioned Officers, are also infantry Marines who are screened and selected to serve at Marine Barracks Washington.

DCmbmcb3

In addition to ceremonial requirements, the Marines of Company A conduct infantry training to prepare for service in operational infantry battalions.  Training is led by post-fleet tour Platoon Commanders and Platoon Sergeants within the company, and field training is conducted at Marine Corps Base Quantico.

Due to the location of Marine Barracks Washington, Company A Marines conduct several unique and informative professional military education events to include battle site studies at civil war battlefields and visits to museums and federal government institutions across the National Capitol Region.

Compassion on the Job

Bible in a Year:

[Jesus] had compassion on them and healed their sick.

Matthew 14:14

My friend Ellen calculates payroll for an accounting firm. This may sound like a straightforward job, but there are times when employers submit their information later than requested. Ellen often makes up for this by working long hours so employees can receive their money without delay. She does this out of consideration for the families that depend on those funds to buy groceries, purchase medicine, and pay for housing.

Ellen’s compassionate approach to her job points me to Jesus. On earth, He sometimes ministered to people when it was inconvenient for Him. For instance, Christ wanted some alone time after He heard that John the Baptist had been killed, so He boarded a boat in search of an isolated place (Matthew 14:13). Perhaps He needed to grieve for His relative and pray through His sorrow.

There was just one problem. Crowds of people tagged along behind Him. This group had various physical needs. It would have been much easier to send the people away, but “when Jesus landed and saw [them], he had compassion on them and healed their sick” (v. 14).

Although it was part of Jesus’ calling to teach people and cure their diseases as He ministered on earth, His empathy affected the way in which He carried out His responsibilities. May God help us to recognize His compassion in our lives and give us the strength to pass it on to others.

By:  Jennifer Benson Schuldt Reflect & Pray

How have you experienced God’s compassion and care? What prevents you from showing God’s love when you carry out your daily responsibilities?

Dear Jesus, thank You for meeting my spiritual and physical needs. Help my thankfulness to overflow in the world so that I can glorify You through caring for other people.

I’ve visited the Commandant’s house (from the outside). Let’s just say his security is ample and visible. John Philip Sousa’s private residence is nearby, in a pleasant neighborhood that is rapidly gentrifying.

Howdy, Kathy.

Any chance you’ve had a Monday with minimal monkey wrenches tossed in the cogs?

This year’s supply was moved from the seasoning racks to the “active” racks six months ago. Wasn’t much else to do during the “stay at home” weeks.

Replenished the seasoning racks in early April. The ash tree that toppled a couple of weeks ago (”thanks” Asian Emerald Ash borer /s) is going to stay uncut until I get some seasoning space. Nice problem to have!

Howdy, PRO.

How was your weekend? Are you still trapped inside by smoke from wildfires? It’s been just awful out there. :-(
