Here's the important part - how was he replaced? "On October 16, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower gave (William J.) Brennan a recess appointment to the United States Supreme Court. Three months later, on January 14, 1957, Brennan was formally nominated to the Court, and the Senate confirmed the appointment on March 19, 1957." And there you have it - one of the most dogmatic liberals in SCOTUS history selected by a Republican.

How does history explain what caused Eisenhower to screw up so badly to have recess-appointed a hard core liberal?
