McConnell: I Will Fill Ginsburg's Seat With Trump's Nominee
NBC ^ | Sept. 18, 2020

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday night that he intends to allow for a floor vote in the Senate to confirm a new nominee made by President Donald Trump to replace the Supreme Court vacancy left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

"In the last midterm election before Justice Scalia's death in 2016, Americans elected a Republican Senate majority because we pledged to check and balance the last days of a lame-duck president's second term. We kept our promise. Since the 1880s, no Senate has confirmed an opposite-party president's Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year," he said.

“ Murkowski said she wouldn’t vote BEFORE the election which leaves her open to vote AFTER the election.”

I suspect the gambit here is to nominate a justice and hold hearings prior to the election, in anticipation of a confirmation post Election Day. Then the democrats are faced with a choice as to whether they attack like rabid dogs (and generate very bad optics) or hold their fire and let the nominee sail through the confirmation hearing.

That leaves the door open to confirm post Election Day no matter the election result, and puts the democrats in a bind during the hearings.

"Collins already said she will not vote for a replacement"

That's not what she said.

This is what she said.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins on Saturday weighed in on the US Supreme Court vacancy, saying that she believes waiting until after the election is the right decision.

“Given the proximity of the presidential election, however, I do not believe that the Senate should vote on the nominee prior to the election,” the Maine senator said in a Saturday statement.

Nowhere in her statement did she come close to saying she "would not vote for a replacement"
