McConnell: I Will Fill Ginsburg's Seat With Trump's Nominee
NBC ^ | Sept. 18, 2020

Posted on 09/18/2020 9:13:51 PM PDT by Helicondelta

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Friday night that he intends to allow for a floor vote in the Senate to confirm a new nominee made by President Donald Trump to replace the Supreme Court vacancy left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

"In the last midterm election before Justice Scalia's death in 2016, Americans elected a Republican Senate majority because we pledged to check and balance the last days of a lame-duck president's second term. We kept our promise. Since the 1880s, no Senate has confirmed an opposite-party president's Supreme Court nominee in a presidential election year," he said.

“McConnell: I Will Fill Ginsburg’s Seat With Trump’s Nominee“

He didn’t say that. He said there would be a floor vote.

"The GOP is in control by 53 to 47, but Murkowski of Alaska has said she won’t vote on a nominee before the election. So that brings us down to 52. . . ."

They only need 48 to beat the Democrats as long as RINO's don't actively vote against. If the RINO's just sit out the vote they can lose 5 RINO's.

As to Ruth....Our forefathers never dreamed that killing babies in the womb is some kind of right.

and that makes Justice Amy Vivian Coney Barrett the perfect replacement for Bader Ginsburg.

Senator McConnell once remarked that keeping Merrick Garland off the Supreme Court was "the most consequential decision I’ve made in my entire public career".

There's now been a new bar set for him. This will be the defining moment of McConnell's career. Getting this done, or failing at it, will determine history and be the most important thing he ever does.

Pelosi ordered the flags at the Capitol to be flown at half-staff due to Ginsburg's death, Drew Hammill, one of Pelosi's top aides, tweeted.

These events usually occur in groups of three. Who's next, Nancy?

If President Trump appoints someone like Amy Coney Barrett who just went through a confirmation hearing in 2017, it would be very hard for Republican Senators who voted for her then to vote against her now, just three years later.

Sen. Mitch McConnell on Fox News, Feb. 13, 2020:

“If you’re asking me a hypothetical about whether this Republican Senate would confirm a member of the Supreme Court to a vacancy created this year, we would fill it.”

The dems will spin their base up. Then the justice will be confirmed in Oct. Thus sending the dem base into a huge funk.

Collins has to have votes from Republicans to get reelected and a load of them are Conservatives.. if she doesn’t vote to confirm she loses in a landslide.. she might as well pack her bags now if she has made up her mind not to vote to confirm before the election

Billy Clowntoon said he would fill Ruth’s seat, even though she is both old and dead.

I generally agree with your list, but I think your toss-ups are too generous. I'm adding my Senate poll model's probability of winning to it.

Sen. Martha McSally (Ariz.) - Lean Democratic (7.0%)
Sen. Thom Tillis (N.C.) - Toss up (18.0%)
Sen. Susan Collins (Maine) - Toss up (12.8%)
Sen. Steve Daines (Mt.) - Toss up (92.1%)
Sen. Joni Ernst (Iowa) - Toss up (47.1%)
Sen. Cory Gardner (Colo.) - Toss up (no polls, 67.2% in 2014))
Sen. David Perdue (Ga.) - Toss up (73.5%)
Sen. Lindsey Graham (S.C.) - Lean Republican (56.6%)
Sen. Kelly Loeffler (Ga.) — Lean R (98.9%)
Sen. James Risch (Idaho) - Lean R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Open Kansas seat held by retiring Pat Roberts - Lean R (75.7%)
Sen. Dan Sullivan (Alaska) - Likely R (98.5%)
Sen. John Cornyn (Texas) - Likely R (98.9%)
Sen. Mitch McConnell (Ky.) - Solid R (98.4%)
Sen. Mike Rounds (S. D.) - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Sen. Ben Sasse (Neb.) - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Sen. Bill Cassidy (La.) - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (Miss.) - Solid R (no polls, 98.1% in 2018)
Sen. James Inhofe (Okla.) - Solid R (100%)
Sen. Tom Cotton (Ark.) - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (W.V.) - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Open Tennessee seat held by retiring Lamar Alexander - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)
Open Wyoming seat held by retiring Mike Enzi - Solid R (no polls, 100% in 2014)

The net result is a probability weighted average of 49.8 seats for Republicans, or a tie Senate.

Republicans need a lightning strike in the Senate to take back the initiative.

Go Turtle Go!!!!!

All of the Turtle’s other faults will pale to insignificance compared to what he has done for the country if he can ram through another Strict Constructionist in time to vote on the inevitable contested election. We’ve been playing Defense replacing one Strict Constructionist with another on the Supreme Court just barely managing to fend off a complete Leftist takeover. With this, we finally get to go on Offense and decisively shift one branch of government back toward the plain words of the Constitution.

Much as I dislike Pierre Delecto, he has been good about voting for judicial nominees.

Collins is toast in Maine. She has no reason not to vote for the nominee. We can offer her a well paid position at some conservative think tank as a reward for sticking with the team.....it was the same deal that one Democrat Senator from North Dakota got last time for voting against Kavanaugh.

Voting for a Strict Constructionist to replace RBG will be popular here in North Carolina so Tillis will be on board.

I dunno about McSally but it looks like she is toast in Arizona. Offer her the same thing as Collins. Its not a bad deal for someone who lost a Senate race and looks set to lose another in a red state......ie she doesn’t appear to have a viable political career.

Murkowski will vote against because she’s not really a Republican. We need to primary her again.

So I see one defection. I think the others will hold - and we can afford 3 total. We have an ace in the hole here....Mike Pence gets to vote to break any ties in our favor.

But what matters is the Dem Senators up for re-election

Democrats are only defending 12 seats to the Republicans 23, essentially a reversal of 2018.

Alabama: Doug Jones (0%, Republicans take back)
Delaware: Chris Coons (safe)
Illinois: Dick Durbin (safe)
Massachusetts: Ed Markey (safe)
Michigan: Gary Peters (86.6%)
Minnesota: Tina Smith (98.6%)
New Hampshire: Jeanne Shaheen (safe)
New Jersey: Corey Booker (safe)
New Mexico: Ben Ray Lujan (safe)
Oregon: Jeff Merkley (safe)
Rhode Island: Jack Reed (safe)
Virginia: Mark Warner (safe)

Democrats will lose one seat.
